Clairefontaine has a line of toned paper (both beige-y natural colors and grey) that's meant for mixed techniques, it holds up really well IMO. It's very thick. Strathmore's 400 Series toned tan paper is less robust but I've done some gouache work on it and it didn't buckle as much as I would expect.

Great tips! I'm already having a hard enough time with my off white paper at the moment so I'm gonna stick with that for a little while longer. but I'll keep the tips in mind for when I grab my toned papers once more.

Yessss these pieces are stunning! And I totally agree on the watercolor aspects of tiens paper. It doesn't really work 😂 BUT (I don't have any toned paper on hand, so) I'm wondering whether you can use metallic or glitter watercolor? I mean - the sheen and glitter should stay on in theory!? So at least you could do watercolor embellishments x) 🌻

Hellllo so I have tried metallic watercolour and it does work depending on how much you apply it (some are better than others) I apply it to embellish colours on top of what I've already done x

Have you tried using a solvent and multiple layers with toned paper? Also, Polychromos as oil based and harder than prisma and should not have that waxy sheen.
