I had a similar experience with my son when he started school (at 3 years old in France !). We used to draw hearts with a coloring pen on our wrists (mine and his) every morning and say that if we missed each other during the day, we knew we were both connected and thinking about each other by looking at our little drawn hearts. Also, for a few weeks I would blow kisses in an enveloppe and put the enveloppe in his pocket or school bag, so that if he felt sad or hurt himself for example falling down while playing on the playground, he could use one of mummy's kisses. After a few weeks he came back from school and said he did not need my kisses any more because he was having fun and did not feel sad any more. Huge win :)

I loved doing a podcast, but it's not really financially viable at the moment. The costs that go into it for production, editing, the time for planning, recording etc, the podcast space is too competitive now that it's hard to generate good income for it. I have to be more picky now with what I do as I have more limited time.

Hi, I’m fortunate to have 2 kids who love school (not sure how this happened as I hated it), but I heard this advice to draw a heart on kids hand at the drop off and tell them to always look at it if they don’t feel well. Maybe making this a routine or giving Grey a lovely sticker at this last moment of drop off would work?

Hi Lily, my son was exactly the same starting primary and it broke my heart for months. After Xmas we started him at breakfast club out of necessity but the change was NIGHT AND DAY in his behaviour. We were so shocked. He went from crying and hugging us to skipping in to have his breakfast. When I thought about it, it made sense because it's a much more relaxed environment, there's less kids and more chance for the helpers to sit with them and chat rather than rushing straight into the craziness of the classroom and register. This too shall pass 🙌 best wishes to you all, Sept is no joke xxx

Dear Lily vest is a fun, practical and above all, cool addition to your look. I wouldn't worry what others think about it. Unfortunately, people only wear trends and don't know how to appreciate or recognize their own style. You really know how to wear every piece in such a way that when I see it on you, I immediately think, oh, that's just her style. Stay like that because there are very few real content creators with whom we can identify in real life.

Im in Aotearoa too and my son turned 5 in June (Lily was my mum relief through the first years of his life) He's been at school for a term 3 and drop offs have been the tricky part. His teacher has a cuddly toy that the kids cuddle if they need to which has helped. We've done stickers and chats to give him perspective. Best thing that has helped is leaving him with a task/job like popping the chairs down or his teacher will ask him to pull something out for their day. It helps switch his "school frame of mind" on. Good luck and enjoy, they grow so quickly once at school.

One of my favorite tricks for difficult school drop offs is working with school to assign them a very important job! This is especially good for kids who love being helpers. If there’s an adult at school that they really like and feel connected to, they can help them, or they can be morning greeters, take attendance, hand out assignments, etc. The more important the better!

Our younger son (he's now 27) was so, so shy when he was little, and drop off at nursery school was really difficult ... until Halloween. He loved going into school in his costume (a furry pumpkin) and after that he was fine! I hope that Grey settles in soon, I'm sure she will.

My son just started preschool so I completely understand how difficult drop off is. He loves Daniel Tiger so we’ve been reading the Daniel goes to school book which seems to reassure him. Sending you a virtual hug as it’s the worst feeling leaving them in the morning if they’re upset. Also, I got an Apple Watch after having my second and find it super helpful. I only wear it when I leave the house and need access to my phone. It’s so easy to just glance down at my wrist to screen a message and or get notifications of scheduling. It’s also nice to not have to hold my phone while chasing after little ones.

The book The Kissing Hand is one that is regularly used (quite heartbreaking now I’m a mum too!) I usually have lots of ideas but I have mat leave brain 😂

I have an AppleWatch, I resisted it for a long time because I felt like I was connected enough and it would be worse. But I love it! I have turned off notifications for all messaging apps, I only get them if my bestie messages me 😂 and I use it for reminders when it's time to take my medication, checking out my calendar, reminders when I need to leave for an appointment, and also tracking my sleep and my exercise. I'm sure you can do much more with it but for me, that's what really helps.

One of my kids would hold his hand to his cheek while standing in line and 2 feet away from me❤❤

School hand over!!! Don't make it a thing. Don't reward good drop offs but also don't make a fuss about bad ones. If they know they get special treatment it will go on and on and on!! At the end of the day as hard as it is we all have to do things we don't necessarily love doing. My oldest is 6 and he tried it but we soon changed the mind set of starting the day off happy and we will have a good day!
@Ellie655 Жыл бұрын
It's better to validate their emotions than force a 'positive mindset' on children. Validating and acknowledging their feelings is not giving them special treatment! Imagine if you were finding something tricky, and your feelings were ignored, and you were told you were attention seeking and to stay positive. This kind of attitude towards children is so upsetting to read about. How will they know how to to tend to their more 'difficult' emotions when they're older, when no-one has shown them how.
@amiewilson3012 Жыл бұрын
@Ellie655 I never said I don't acknowledge my sons feelings or that I ignore his emotions. I simply don't build school drop off up as a big deal. As adults, we don't get a round of applause for going into work without crying every morning. We don't get days off because we just don't feel like it today and as harsh and it feels children need to learn this!! Life isn't easy! We have to do this we don't always enjoy. Crying and getting upset isn't going to help! Unfortunately some things just have to be done and both my sons known I am here to talk about anything that they are struggling with once they get home and if I can help in any way they know that I will!!
@Ellie655 Жыл бұрын
@@amiewilson3012 I'm not sure what to say in response to someone who says 'getting upset and crying isn't going to help', as a way to prove they are attuned/validating towards emotional expression! My kids have always found drop off hard. We used to put little love hearts on their hands so when they missed us they could look at it or touch it, reassure, talk about being brave, find a safe person or friend to be with when we left. A big one which we realised was if we dropped off and our kid was the first there, they'd be totally fine however if they were later than everyone - nightmare. Not sure why but it worked.

Oh it’s so hard, but know that so many kids seem to get overwhelmed at drop off. It’s a lot of people all at once. The Kissing Hand book seemed to help my youngest, you basically fill the palm of their hand full of kisses and then close their hand so they can keep their kisses for when they need them throughout the day. My youngest also had a little bit of silky ribbon in his pocket that he could keep with him for comfort. Ultimately like with everything with children ‘it’s just a phase’ and she will get through it. I like to explain that it’s normal to feel like that sometimes but that it will pass and she is safe and she is loved and mummy/daddy always come back. Also, rather than trying to discuss it in the moment, I find it better to discuss it with my kids another time when we’re playing together or they’re in the bath…

I also resisted for it so long too thinking it might overwhelm me but completely opposite I feel like I have my s-t together haha I can check my goodgle calander whilst showering after the gym sorry TMI - best investment I’m a Mum and it’s been so handy just a note if you use whatsapp you can’t read messages on whatsapp on your apple watch but you can get notifications by downloading whatsapp on your iPhone , if that makes sense. I wish I did get the bigger size as I have less control with screen with small size. Snacks for after schools - the yogurt berries are great!

The change of routine can be very unsettling for little ones. In South Africa they go at 6 and it is much better than when they go younger. My goodness, the drop off when they are younger and don't want to go. I would find myself crying in the car a lot afterwards.

Apple Watch- 100 % yes. I initially got mine to track workouts but I really enjoy it for keeping on top of messages without pulling my phone out and then getting distracted by other apps. It lets me see when I really NEED to look at my phone. Of course you can also set what notifications you want on the watch so only the really important ones need to buzz your wrist. Now when I wear my ‘nice watch’ it feels like a holiday even from the important notifications. Fully recommend!! X

Honest opinion..the Apple Watch doesn’t make it less rude. I would just be honest that you need to check your photo during pick ups. The watches are just another way to be distracted.

I always tell my 6 year old daughter what we are going to do after school so she has something to look forward. Of course it needs to be something exciting 😅like going to get some ice cream, watch a film or crafting. even my 2 year old remembers those plans and gets excited for it.

As an Australian living in the UK, 22 here definitely feels closer to the high 20s. It feels much hotter than 22 in Aus. It's so weird

South African living in London - 22 definitely feels uncomfortable and much hotter in London. I also didn’t believe it until I experienced it!

@@marelizewilke7204 that’s very interesting. Could it be psychosomatic because everyone around you is saying how hot it is?

I really don't like the 'reception' year at 4 in England and Wales - both our daughters started school when we lived down there and while they both coped ok I think it's too young (in Scotland we start school at 5). Our older daughter bounced in - and out - of school every day whereas our younger daughter had much more 'separation anxiety'. I haven't any tips I'm afraid - each child has their own personality and it will pass. The best thing you can be is as relaxed as possible about it as she will pick up on any anxiety you have - I'd definitely recpmmend you stop phoning the school each day - they will let you know if everything isn't ok!

Maybe draw a little heart on her and and your hand and tell her that you think of her and that she can look at the heart and know that you are there for her. Might make the transition easier ❤

I find broadcast channels very annoying - it feels like being talked at.
