Dealing with true target panic disorder in archery can be very frustrating and difficult to overcome and I’ve found a simple process that really works well for me shooting recurve and longbows for hunting and 3D competition!

Great video Jeff. PS I was at the bow show last weekend. I spoke with the fellas from Three Rivers archery. They spoke very highly of you. They are great people. I'm a fairly new archer. And I really learn a lot from your videos. Keep it up.

I find it fascinating from a psychotherapeutic perspective because instinctive shooting based on instinct includes the instinctive fight or flight process because it's based upon survival. Where fight or flight program runs, there's no conscious cognition. Ergo the fight or flight program kicks in as a default program. So to overcome the default program of fight or flight, conscious choice strategy must be introduced to Interrupt the default program. Multiple ways to do that! Like you're doing Jeff! Consciously review the experience, consciously adapt the strategy and test. Repeat for refinement of the new installation. Like a child learning to cross the road, they learn to check both way's before confirming the way is clear to fulfil the result. Human neurology is absolutely fascinating!!👊💥👊😎

Hi Jeff my name is Vince and I love watching your videos and I learned so much from you and I thank the lord there are people out there that share their knowledge of traditional archery . I also like to share something I learned from another great shooter named Rick Welch ! He has many videos and I took your advice and Rick’s dead hand release method and I swear that I can’t miss out to 20yards this year I shot s doe at 18 yards in low light and hardly could see my arrow in my peripheral vision and still pin wheeled that doe and she only ran 30 yrs and was done in ten seconds or less !! Thanks Jeff for sharing your knowledge

Jeff, I’m glad you’re man enough to share your struggles lol. I suffer from target panic something fierce. I can change my shooting style and it cures it for a while during the “honeymoon phase” but as soon the newness of the new method wears off, target panic rears its ugly head again. The struggle is real 👊

I have went through the Joel turner video program and it helped so much that I have basically eliminated my target panic. It is all about the mental part of your shot. How he talks his way through each and every shot. He has a. Shot cycle that uses a lot of conversation that you are speaking through out the shot while you are going through the shot. And that was a game changer for me. But I have sense simplified it down to a shorter shot cycle that talks me through my hole shot cycle in just three words. And after I have got through the first two parts of my shot cycle I forget about them and just concentrate on the last part of the shot cycle. And the bow just goes off with out me even thinking about it and that arrow is wright where it’s supposed to go. But I have found that all I have to do is not think about my shot cycle things can go off the rail pretty fast. I owned an archery shop with in door lanes. I am convinced that every body has a target panic problem but a lot of the people have perfected their shot and they don’t notice it until some day something will trigger it and they will have to learn to deal with it. Jeff you are absolutely correct. Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope other shooters will follow your lead. But they will have to work at it. Once it’s shows up it just doesn’t want to go away,. God bless you. And thank you again.

Hi Jeff, thanks for tackling this subject, i have been working to overcome TP for about 3 months and it is improving. Like you i have a process. Interesting that also like you i can say the process fully/slowly out loud at shorter distances, but at longer distances i rush it a bit. Watching you at longer distances your arrow goes after " Draw - Ho", hold focus push are not there yet. I guess we both have a bit further to go yet. Keep up the great videos and thanks again.

@@paulegerton2012 you’re right, even the camera makes me want to rush for no good reason and even if I’m hitting where I want I’m still not satisfied and feeling like I’m in total control every shot. Thanks for sharing brother!

Here is the variable we have too shoot at the ground as much as we shoot on a horizontal shot. Grab the bow and shoot downward position you can feel the breaks of the back being used differently. It's like working out with weights if you do flat bench all the time and never do incline bench, your as weak as a two toed Sloth. So if your going to hunt elevated you have to shoot over and over to be strong in that position. I stump shoot 365 days a year and I shoot tons of bent over position shots to simulate tree shots . That's the difference. But also I hold like a compound wich gives me the perfect arrow every draw back and I release when needed like a compound, it's wicked accuracy with perfect dynamic form every time or I don't shoot the arrow.

I have heard/tried breaking up the shot from the draw and aim is critical for a lot of people to control their shot better. I am currently using a grip seer to help me break up my draw and aim from the shot. I like shooting open loop without a clicker or grip seer but it’s really difficult to keep control for long. On the journey with you Jeff. I am hitting anchor, getting into alignment, checking my arrow with split vision, then I rotate my elbow and feel that the tension in the string hand is right, THEN I focus on spot and push with the bow hand. Very similar to your process. I think what happens is the bow hand push almost becomes a mental trigger, or maybe it’s better to say that it shrinks the time you are actually in open loop to be that split second as you are pushing to the target. Fluid hill style shooting works amazing when you don’t have target panic…when you do it’s impossible to shoot that way with control.
