HA! Was just about to send my designs to a developer, totally about to smack him in the face with a "TA DA" moment. Thought I would just drink my coffee and watch this vid before sending. So now I will ask him what he thinks of my solution instead of just handing my designs off to him (I don't want to be that designer). This vid was really helpful (as are all of them), thanks for doing what ya do Jesse!!

Great video, thank you! It's great to hear tips from both sides of the coin. I think your last point about actually asking developers how they like to work is really important. I always thought there was a set framework for handoff but it makes total sense to actually speak to the developers and ask how they'd like it.

Developer here, and I agree with all of those. I'd like to add another thing though. I think generally, people don't like getting their time wasted (this is especially true for devs who are tragically allergic to inefficiencies in any form), so if designer's gonna present their design, just come prepared with a proper agenda of things to discuss (or things could go really awry), stop people from going off-topic, wrap up with key action items, and post meeting notes or recording afterwards. This will make every one so much happier. Be proactive and most importantly, BE TRANSPARENT! Make it clear what help you need and how long it might take to complete tasks. (Rather than just pop up out of months of absence with a magical design that doesn't fit technical constraints). The developers and pms are gonna be confused/panicking and designers are gonna get stuck with 100 of the same confused comments on their prototype. Anyway great video and thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I love the idea that a developer might give any consideration to a meeting other than what they want. Beyond being left to write code, i regularly find developers to be expectant of others to go the extra mile whilst never giving any consideration to applying that to their own practice.

Hey Jesse, great video! I think the points you made are very important to understand. As the only designer on a very small team who works directly with our developer, I can attest to the importance of early and consistent communication throughout the entire design process from planning to execution. I am still struggling to find some good examples on the interwebs of design documentation. Do you know of any best practices or systems of organizing documenting? Maybe you could do a more in-depth video of how to organize & document screens and interactions to communicate with developers - I would definitely be interested to know more! Any resource recommendations would be greatly appreciated (from you or anyone who has something to share in the comments)!

I create a working prototype (html, css, javascript) in codepen and give the url to developer so they can copy/paste everything into the site and apply the logic to it.

Great tips Jesse. I have a question for you and other designers. How do you maintain the versions of your ongoing projects? I presume you are using Sketch to do your designs. If so, how do you update them and keep a track of each version? Thanks!

You can do it manually or use something like abstract
