Hello from Texas, great video and story. I'm a "larger" small rancher in my area. For all non-industrial agricultural in the US and around the world, it is about the lifestyle, not the money. Great job on this video! I love watching draft horses. When I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s in northern Wisconsin, USA, our county fair always had horse pulling competitions. These farmers typically used Belgians and Percherons, and watching them work in teams of two was just beautiful. Thank you for showing these beautiful animals.

Thank you so much for sharing this, Simeon. Horses are some of my favorite 'people' and I love experiencing the bond we make with them. Per's lifestyle is an example of how naturally peaceful and rewarding life can be using a horse instead of a machine to 'partner with' for the heavy work he is unable to do on his own. It was a joy to watch. Thank you, again. :-D

This was just beautiful. There's a reason people valued horses in the past...not just as a hobby. They provided transportation, muscle, and companionship. And they like to work! They are so intelligent and lovely! Having once trained horses, I'm toying with the idea, once we have our farm running smoothly, of getting a horse/pony to train to cart to help with harvest, hay, etc. I have to sell the hubby on it though. We have a rule that all members of the farm must contribute something. 😊

Thank you for sharing. :-) I used to drive Percherons in northern British Columbia, Canada, to feed cattle and do the hauling that the tractors could not due to weather/ground conditions. There is definitely something almost magical about driving draught and light horses in harness that tractors/machines can neither replicate nor replace.

Simeon this was a really great video. Took me back to the early 50's when the horses were still SO important to the farmer/ranchers. I was young and was allowed to go with them to the woods and harvest wood when they were using a team to skid the logs back to the hose to be used for wood, firewood ect: The horses were also used to pull the tractors when they were stuck in the mud during the spring and fall and they would get the job done. So peaceful, thank you so much for sharing this video and pass on the thanks to the horseman for keeping the horse traditions and the environment alive. You and your family is truly Blessed.

I grew up next to a norwegian farmer, who refused to buy a tractor, and the roads in his kingdom had three paths; one for the horse and two for the weels. He had won a price for his well managed farm, he grew grain and grass and had some forrest as well, and we used to steel apples or pears from his orchard. He owned three horses, a few cows, some pigs and chicken as well and in his barn was a paradice. On the ground floor it sheltered the animals and machines, above there was hay and below, a dirt cellar and a smith. We jumped in his hay, played in a rusty old lorry standing parked under the barn brige, and he was both a prowd and kind old man. Now I watch Simeons videos instead, and I love them.

I. Love. This. The conscious effort to be closer to and more gentle with the land is much needed. I understand that this cannot be the normal way for everyone, time and efficiency constraints dictate how productive businesses must be. But, this is refreshing to see, it is a hopeful sign that the younger generations are mindful of more natural systems and reviving old ways of doing things. I am always interested in seeing more content like this. Thank You Simeon! 🍀

Why would anyone give a 👎 on this video? I absolutely cannot understand. Fantastic scenery and photography. An incredibly scenic rural setting. When I was a youngster in early teens I would mow hay with a sickle mower which had a seven foot bar, 2.13 meters, however, I didn’t use horses I used a small 8N Ford tractor. Wow! That’s been 56 years ago. Stay safe and blest. Nebraska USA viewer and Swedish Homestead fan.

On Vancouver Island a man named Merve Wilkinson had a property called Wildwood. In the ‘40s he implemented sustainable harvesting of timber using horses following, he said, a Scandinavian model. Thank you Per; thank you Simeon. I loved seeing this logging team for many reasons. There was a horse logging team here near Sequim not too long ago, but they've left. There are draft horses on a farm in the area. I love driving by to see them as often as I can. They are such magnificent, gentle, patient creatures. As oil becomes less and less available, I think that we will necessarily go back to working with animals - if we keep the breeds alive; so many breeds are disappearing. If I had the resources, I'd raise horses and larger livestock. Not only do they have the ability to help us work, but they also improve and grow the soil, unlike motorized machinery.
