I'm working on one of these right now. Light meter does not work, and it's clearly been worked on before. So many little parts crammed in such a small package! A brilliant little device, I thank you for the help. I didn't want to break it removing the lens.

I hated the day my sensei declared I would become the shop's 35RD technician. We began to see oil from the lens' helicoid migrating onto the shutter blades within the first year of production! (Does this sound like the OM-10? It should!) That meant many, many warranty repairs from the very beginning of this model, followed by years and years of out-of-warranty repairs -- one of the most time-consuming compact repairs ever! It was required that we disassemble the entire mechanism, remove and clean each shutter blade and part individually, reassemble and set back to factory tolerances. But after the first score or so, I changed my mind, and declared I would make of myself the best RD repair tech. Soon I came to love them, and have repaired literally hundreds of these fine cameras! My typical repair time was little more than an hour! Near the end of my repair days, we began to see a problem due to excessive wear, though. This when the aluminum teeth of the shutter speed dial that mesh with the long brass gear shaft (shown at 23:30, precisely where your tweezers are pointing) wear out. As replacement parts were long gone, the only solution was to "harvest" good parts from dead bodies, but even those were soon exhausted. I regret that I could never find a method to resurrect a worn out shutter speed dial. But have a care! There are two different versions of this part, which must match the heavy brass ring with the hole through with the long brass gear shaft passes! Shutter speed dials from one RD will not necessarily match that from another! Still, I would save every RD I could find, if I wanted to keep fixing them.

That was a sad storie Clinton, and I think it had happen or still happen in the camera industry, that some of the part that is used hard is made by poor material or a bad design. So they will for sure break or worn out easy and of course it will impossible to get the spare parts, but it will also be a problem to take parts from another camera (or a lens) because it's almost the same parts that get's worn out or break. I think the factorys calculate very hard on, how long (or short) will the different parts last before something serious thing will happen, and then the repair shops will say, it's "sad" but it will cost way too much for you, so it will be better if you buy a new camera or lens". It's interresting that there are 2 different versions of the exposure ring but with the same bad design, and of course the bad choice of material, Aluminium against hard steele is not good as you mention. So I understand your fustration about when you trying to harvest as many as possible of good parts, I sometimes do the same when I found a broken camera or a lens, when I try to fix a not working camera or a lens. Mate, this is probably one of the most helpful videos I've ever come across on youtube. Before finding it I was struggling to figure out removing all the lens elements to de-fungus, let alone fix the seized aperture ring.

I want to thank you for your nice video which allowed me to fix my RD which had stuck shutter blades. I also have a Canonet QL GIII with shutter blades and am looking forward to your next video where you explain how to take out and clean the individual shutter blades. I haven't found a video on the net where you explain the ""TOTAL"" disassembly of the shutter. Thank you !!!

I've repaired a bunch of cameras and lenses. Removing the lens elements on this camera was the hardest. I spent 2.5 hours trying everything I could... Eventually, only a combination of heat gun and plumbing wrench worked... The second lense is glued, it didn't move otherwise

Similar feedback to Alexander Chater mentioned below. Struggled with removing aperture housing from the front as mentioned from another online document. Great walk through of all the steps and explanation. Was able to salvage an Olympus RD with sticky shutter with this video. Nice work!

Thanks a lot for uploading! Just bought a barely used 35 RD that seemed fine when testing, but now is stuck... I already worked on older cameras but the 35 RD looks like a new level of complexity and the order of operation you documented is invaluable!

Good morning, The shutter mechanism of my RD is not working, I noticed that there is next to the piece that holds the pin that controls the opening, another piece where there is a very thin spring that is loose and I don't know where it goes. Hi Mike, I recently bought an Olympus 35 RD and your videos are being really helpful. Thank you for those uploads :) One thing, I had to "break" the first lens retaining ring (the one you're removing on minute 19:38) and I want to find a new one to replace it, do you have any suggestion on how to find one? When the camera is set to A Aperture blades operate normally and open to aperture set by the light meter; in manual mode they lag, do not open accurately to manually set aperture. Any idea why ?

This is a great video to see the inside workings of the camera if you have problems other than sticking shutter and aperture, such as in my case, a jammed shutter ring. But if you only need to clean the shutter and aperture blades, you do not have to remove lens unit from the body. The complete shutter/aperture/lens assembly can be removed from the front. There is no need to remove the rear lens element. Below is a link to an article by Henry Taber on how to complete this task.

In another vintage camera repair I used graphite powder as a lubricant and it worked well. Maybe Mikeno62 can comment on this.

Hi, Thank you so much for the video! Can I ask a Questions? I have the same camera that seems to have stuck shutter because of oil dripping, I couldn't find anyone to repair it for me in my country so I am thinking into doing it Myself. Do you think I could do this if I never did something like this before. I am pretty much good at fixing stuff like bikes, my car and computers but this seems pretty complicated with a lot of small mechanical parts :) thanks again for the video Maestro!

@@alexparada607 Hi, Ive followed the tutorial and managed to clean it myself and put i back together at home with a cheap toolkit and improvising some of them. But I could not say that it was an easy job, I gave up some days and picked it up again, you decide if its worth the time.
