That was really a good session with Baron! Draft horses really have a calm temperament. I've only worked with Quarter Horses and they're considered to be a somewhat calm breed. I don't think most 3 yr QH would be that calm. Your Suffolk Punch colts are beautiful with fantastic temperaments.

Jim, I don’t own a horse but I enjoy watching videos about them. I’ve seen a product called Likit Horse Treats used on several other channels and the the horses LOVE it! The product come in a tub that the horse licks - there are several different flavors and horses tend to prefer one flavor over the others. When I was watching you and your wife trying to tempt Baron into the shoeing stocks with grain, I was thinking that using a tub of Likit would have been very useful because it’s so convenient to use.

Your patience will be rewarded with a willing horse. One of my Percheron geldings came to me obviously having been handled roughly when being shod (rope burns on his hind fetlocks !) and it took me half a year of daily patient step-by-step work for him to give his feet willingly and without resistance. My son shoes him without a shoeing stock, just with foot rests. I had a shoeing stock made for this horse initially, but he was very much afraid of it. It just was too tight for him since he weighs almost 2400 ponds,

I just discovered your channel and really like it! Such an excellent and detailed teacher of all things draft horses. We have heavyweight Belgian pulling horses that are 2,800 lbs each and have also had Percherons so I enjoy watching horse stuff like what we do. I have never seen a Suffolk Punch breed before. He is gorgeous and has such a nice shape and personality and is very compliant for a stallion especially. I also like how your wife says "oh you're so cute" to the horses which is the same thing I say to all the horses I'm around.

Baron is by far the best-looking horse you have; it'll be interesting to see how well he works, as you get him trained. He sure does handle well from the ground. btw--we used to put Tabasco on our horses' manes (don't get it on their skin; just the mane itself) whenever we had a mane-chewer in the pasture. Doesn't take long for the mane-chewer to find something else to munch on! Baron's going to be absolutely gorgeous when that mane grows out; I hope you don't roach it. With his looks and disposition, you might make a good bit from standing him at stud. Looking forward to the next video so I can see him being driven :)

Another great video so informative, I live in the U.K. where the Suffolk Punch are from and they are very low in numbers hear also. I know a farmer who has a mare who had a colt foal this Spring and she has been bred again so he is hoping for a filly foal next Spring. Baron is a wonderful young guy he is so good natured. I hope Lady is in foal they will have a beautiful baby. Thank you for sharing this with us

Shoeing/trimming horses is very hard on your back and legs (especially as you age). The horse is distributing some of his body weight on you to maintain balance while your in a hunched over position. I can only imagine chiropractors cringing while watching farriers at work. The stocks won't change your hunched-over posture much but it takes all the weight off you and places it on the stocks.

Not getting something scared the first time is true of about almost any living creature. Our daughter having had cancer as a baby, and my husband and I both being horse people, we took the same approach to our daughter. The first time she had chemo, she was going to have to have a needle stuck in her chest. We handled it about the same way. My husband distracted her by sticking tape on her face and letting her take it off and stick it on his while she was being accessed. She never noticed. She never cried once during 15 months of chemo, and other kids had to be pinned down and forcibly accessed while they screamed. Any time you can keep a child or horse or anything other creature calm and distracted during a fear inducing event you are so much better off. They can also bite you in the butt while you are working on their front feet if their head isn't tied. He is getting calmer the more you fool with his feet. I think he is realizing you don't plan to hurt him. Aren't good feet one of the hallmarks of Suffolks? I think that is one of the things Suffolks are famed for. What a good boy! He backed out perfectly.

Good tutorial, thanks. I am just now working on a shoeing stock for my Clydesdales with timbers from our woods. (At 60 i've had enough of wrestling with their feet!) I have one Clydesdale mare with feet that are virtually maintenance-free, and the rest as you can imagine are more high-maintenance. I have no idea when that one mare, our oldest, has such great feet - she is one of those "contrary to popular belief" horses you mentioned. She has not passed he trait down to her offspring. I have a set of draft-size "Budnippers" out of Idaho by the way, force-multiplying nippers, multiple the force you put on them by 13 times. They are a game-changer (especially in dry weather) and i recommend them to anyone doing draft feet.

I think you were very wise to not push him by trying to trim his hooves this first time in the stocks. He wasn’t ready and had a tough time adjusting to the new experience. I could easily have seen him whacking his head on the crossbar or responding to the butt strap by breaking forward. As a retired farrier, I’d tell you that, in my opinion, he’s high in the heels which is easily corrected. Nice work.

Baron could not make it any clearer that he likes you and likes to be around you. He is blowing in your ear and nibbling your shirt! Maybe lead him from dark side of the scale and stocks toward the light. He is such a willing horse-just young and inexperienced. I sure hope you can help bring the Suffolk Punch back from the brink of disappearing. They are an exceptionally beautiful and versatile breed.

Not to say that does not happen but the chances are extremely slim.

There are good horses that are not always nice. Baron is a nice good horse. Once he gains total trust in you, he's gonna be an amazing horse. The horse God has placed him well. Lady must be almost due for oestrus which we pray does not come. She should be a good paddock buddy for him during her pregnancy. He is not gonna go apeshit around her now, unless she is in heat.
