I'm building an LED sign out of reclaimed wood. Some of it is barn wood (heavily textured in Montana), some of it is an old bed frame (hand planed transparent veneer). It's a beauty.

even old oak fence posts while rotten at base can be 80% re-used for woodwork and often given away free.

I think using reclaimed wood is the best. Especially timber that has been used in construction. I am not referring to pallets which for the most part is junk. I have gotten some fur that I still haven't used as to me it's very valuable

I would like some advice. I've got some rough sawn bits of Australian rosewood. They are filthy with lots of dirt. They are off cuts from a bush mill. There are splits right through in places. What is the best way to clean them? They have been lying around for over 30 years. Is it ok to hose them? What about soap? Should I just brush the dirt off and wipe over with a damp cloth? What about the splits? How do I clean in them? Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Roger. I would suggest using a hose to spray them off. I would not suggest using any soap as that might penetrate in and cause problems with your final finish. Thanks Paul-Woodworkers Guild of America

First I like to thank you sharing your experience in the world of wood with as. I benefited from these experiences many times. I found big number of scrap wood. (i think its Indian teakwood) the problem that majority are not straight and after planing it i loose alot of materials. My question is there a way to straighten lumber by storing it for same time? Thank you

Some older buildings in Arkansas were made from red oak. Just picture that yellow pine beam made from oak.

I also have an abundance of wood shelves similar to what you have pictured here. Silly question but how do I go about prepping that shelf? does a notch have to be milled into the side? It can't be laid butting up against next piece can it? thanks for any info

Hello Anthony, To attach a shelf to a side member you can do one of the following: - mill a dado into the side member- install a clete on the side member that will support the shelf- drill holes into the side member and install shelf pins- use biscuit joinery to attach the shelf to the sides Hope this helps, PaulWoodWorkers Guild of America Video Membership

Hi George , I have a question. With the big slab you have your arm on, if you were to cut slabs from it would toy cut them from the side as it sits on your table or from the top? Never mind the size I just want to know which way would give you the strongest cut piece? Or is there a difference? Thanks
@Wwgoa
@Wwgoa 9 жыл бұрын
+Bill Longland There would not be any significant advantage in strength in one orientation or the other. There might be an advantage in stability, however. If you cut directly perpendicular to the growth rings you would create what are called "quartersawn" boards, which provide greater stability through seasonal fluctuations in humidity. Here's an article that explains this concept in a bit more detail: www.wwgoa.com/article/three-reasons-to-use-quarter-sawn-wood/ So, I would cut the slab into boards that made the most sense for a particular project, to achieve my overall design goals and provide the best yield possible.

I would re-clarify trusting your supplier for hidden nails. It'll probably be some idiot kid that don't know how to put his phone down and do his job. I'll buy the metal detector and do it myself.

That old growth wood is the best, but I'm still reluctant to run it thru my machines.(BTW, lead based paint would be pretty hard to brush or spray. Kidding of course, but paint is oil based or water based. Lead is not a solvent, binder, carrier, or resin. Small amounts of lead were used as pigments or driers. Unfortunate term, and really only a concern if there are toddlers in the environment.)

Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out. Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!
