The Scorpio Races is a beautiful story, especially for horse lovers (Maggie herself is experienced with horses). Like her previous deck, The Raven's Prophecy Tarot, which also took its name from her novels, this deck seems to nod more to the setting and tone of the story than the characters or plot, although there are clear associations in a few cards. I wish the seascape and fantasy element of the story's mythical water horses came through more - seems like that would suit a Scorpio deck more than anything. I appreciate this indepth walk-through because I'm a bit disappointed in the images alone (not the art itself, which is gorgeous, but the artistic choices).

I bought this deck recently because I was really drawn to the artwork and I'm a Scorpion. I can see the point you've made about the different themes in the suits, although Celtic mythology is very strong on animals and I totally get the idea of animals as emotional energy. In terms of the Moon card, I see this as dealing with mystery and illusion on a more earthly, worldly level - even though it's a major - whereas the High Priestess is the moon at a higher, more spiritual, unconscious level. Thanks for sharing this review, it's thought-provoking.

I love The Scorpio Races! One of my favorite books ever. I’ve passed on this deck, though. I just can’t get over the brown backgrounds. The guidebook sounds really lovely.

This was so interesting! I briefly looked at this deck once because I’m a fan of Melissa Cynova, but passed it over when I realized it stemmed from a book I haven’t read and the cards didn’t grab me. But you helped open this up for me-I’d be curious how it can work with Scorpio energy, since I have a fair amount in my chart. And those pairings were beautiful! I think this might be a deck I get to work with after Samhain during the Scorpio zodiac-seems like a great late fall deck. Thanks as always! :)

Wow! I watched this explanation of this deck with great interest as my "early in the morning" wake up interest. Being a horsy type I too had looked at the deck advertising when looking for a new deck. I am at a point when I thought I knew what I should order next but something held me back. This is the deck that now is at the top of my list and I do appreciate that your synchronistic video highlighted it! I haven't read the book either and will probably try to find it. I was delighted to see how well the deck reads and works with an oracle deck. The Celtic people have long had a respect for various animals both mythical and real. The cat is one of the sacred animals so really ideal as the Fool and the horse is sacred to the goddess Epona. Regarding the suits: I can understand that two suits should relate to the humans, (wands and pentacles). Swords suit to the more mythical and symbolic - in a sense pointing at the need to understand. Cups the last suit - animals representing the elements. Sacred animals here are cattle, Salmon, Birds, Deer, Sea creatures etc. Look at the Spirit Animal concept with the Royalty of this suit and see the archetypal qualities - Owl King = wisdom; Hedgehog Queen = protection and nurturing; Fox Knight = need for crafty-ness and intelligence to make best use of what's in the environment; Fawn Page - learning and growing to understand more. This is just my take on it and I would love to hear more of your realisations.

I stumbled on this deck today. I love the artwork. And the warm brown colour is very soothing. I've been riding horses as a kid till well in my 20s. So am connecting deeply. Just got the audio book , and the deck will follow soon. LOVE💘

Thank you for this review, I bought this deck for a couple of reasons, 1-I love the book Scorpio Races and is a book I read over and over. 2-I really like and use often The Raven's Prophecy Tarot, just love her art style and this deck is beautiful imho. I relish the wildness of this deck, seeing the characters from the book come alive. At least that is how it feels to me. It is a great reader for me and seems always "on point". I do see the characters and the story/plot of the book in this deck. My first walk through, when I got this deck, I was able to name almost all of the characters both human and animal. For me, the book Scorpio Races adds another dimension with its voice to the overall "story" of the deck and reading with it.

As you mentioned, I thought you might like to hear my comments. Just worked non-stop through this powerful deck. Contrary to my normal methods, I paid no attention to the pictures, only to all the upright meanings. Then the pictures seemed to anchor or echo the words. Whether the animals have Celtic symbolology or not I just accepted they held the info. Read the suit breakdowns - there seems to be no place for esoteric thought. Yet I found great depth and thinking on a higher level. For me it applies to the here and now - not the distant past or distant future. It applies to what you did yesterday and what you can do tomorrow.

I actually find that to be a nice change of pace because most of my decks inhabit a more magical or esoteric world. Maggie Stiefvater is one of my favourite authors and the Raven Prophecy Tarot Deck is one of my favourite decks to work with, but I honestly still don't know if I really feel the scorpio sea deck. We'll see if I decide to buy it in the future. But this video definitely was very helpful in shining a better light into what this deck would entail and how working with it could be.

To answer your questions at the end: I don't see much overlap between the book and the cards, although it's been years since I read it. I'd say the Lovers looks like the main teen girl character and main teen boy character, whose outlines are perhaps seen in the Sun and Moon cards, and there are some family members, some townsfolk, and a feisty real horse in the story, but the mythical creatures are limited to water horses IIRC, and I don't even see those here, except perhaps in the Star card, which exemplifies the spirit of the story simply but beautifully IMHO. There are beautiful beach scenes and town details in the story which could have been included but are not, such as a community festival celebrated with hot glazed rolls, and an old car that gets worked on. Honestly, as a fan of the story, I have the same sensation looking at the deck: Who are these people and what is their story, and why are there so many animals? There is a priest and a church confessional scene, and a lot of horse training, but I'm struggling to connect much else.

There is some nice art, but it's minimized in these dull, mustardy surroundings, which is a shame. I don't mind the rather common looking people (they're refreshing, esp. the ones with some age diversity) but as you point out often, it doesn't read very well for traditional meanings. I love Raven's Prophecy but gave this one a pass. Thanks for the in-depth look and analysis.
