I had to make one in art class. They expected us to make a marionettes without puppeteering skills. No useful templates or instruction. Only a brief oversimplified paper or two, which barely describe what makes a marionettes. One example was a four legged creature with two control strings noted as really simple. I kid you not. Absolutely unhelpful. Educational time wasted.

So, apparently it is almost as simple as cartoons portray it, is it? And one difference is, they show an even cross in the cartoons. Is that a simplification for animation or is that an outdated or simpler form of marionette? Also, even real puppeteering looked like half sorcery to me.

No, i have a few marionettes with even cross controls. Their are different sizes and types of puppets and some can be extremely simple to use. As a puppet collector and Punch and judy prof I have experience with many puppets. At their simplest they can take as little as a minute to master and the easiest do generally have × control sticks and 4 strings wich tend to be toy style puppets. The more complicated type have an elongated stick and sometimes an extra for leg movement. If you need any advice/assistance with puppeteering or would just like some more info then let me know

Disclaimer: only works with new puppets. this won't work because from what I can remember, pelham puppets are very flipping old. Also if you have a pelham puppet and it isn't new then this will not work
