Ricky Syers is an off-beat 50 year old street performer who found his calling as a puppeteer after a lifetime of manual labor. While performing in New York City’s Washington Square Park, he met Doris Diether, an 86 year old community activist. They became friends and he made a marionette that looks just like her. Now she’s joined his act and the two of them can often be seen performing together.

My sister and I met Ricky and "Chops" about 6 years ago outside a bar in Dunellen, NJ. We were amazed by his talent and artistry and hired him to do a private performance for the children in our family. I was cleaning today and came across one of the photos. When I first seen the beginning of this video I thought the dog was real. Once I seen that the dog was a puppet I thought that it was amazing and how it looks real. Not true. It all depends on the mentality of the person doing the work. Are you going to tell me many firefighters have not touched hearts. How about John Cena who has done exponentially more for the Make a Wish foundation than any other star. Or me, who has chosen to work in fitness with the senior and disabled populations when I could have easily chosen to chase the private rich people. Or let's say Bill Gates and his foundation. A job is a grind where as work is passion and if you do anything with passion you will touch someone's heart, somewhere, somehow.

This lovely man has triggered a memory for me of my Great Uncle, a little French speaking illiterate man born in 1900 Chassell, Michigan. He spent most of his adult life hunting and fishing in solitude in northern Manitoba, Canada. He had an incredible collection of hand whittled marionettes, and other pieces. I remember specifically his ability to make curiosities from one piece of wood that had independently articulated moving parts inside, whittled from outside inward. As a child, they were magical🤗, and so was he! Thank you so very much for who you are and what you do for the world. Thank you for sharing it too🥰. ❤️🇨🇦

I loved puppets as a little kid and always begged my mom for one but they freak her out so I make them myself I’m 20 now and my youngest brother whose 12 is interested in them as well I’m currently studying visual and special effects I want to make props for movies puppets are used in movies and stuff all the time!
