If you like the movies, the 1997 anime is really good and covers more content, the 2016/17 anime is garbage in pretty much every way, definitely avoid. but I cannot stress enough there is NO alternative to the manga, nothing has come close to the full story and the absolutely insane art, if you only read 1 manga in your life I'd suggest Berserk

to complement that, only about 1/4 of the history have anime adaptations, so you can only experience the full story in the manga. Unfortunately, after the tragedy of 2016/2017 anime, we have little hope for another adaptation anytime soon

This series gets clowned on for its video game fight scenes, but I ain't gonna lie theirs some great animated moments. So far from what I've heard there has been one extra scene in five episodes of the memorial edition, it was a good scene, but you're not missing much. There is some "very" graphic stuff in these movies, good luck to whoever edits these.

I think you should watch the 1997 anime first, then the Memorial Edition which is basically the same as the movies but improved a little bit with extra scenes, and serialized. It's not too late to rethink your schedule.

I recommend the manga above all else, but the '97 anime is my fav of the adaptations. even if you don't watch it, the dub bloopers from that series are 100% worth checking out and would even make a fun extra reaction video. enjoy Berserk!!

There are even several continued jokes when you go from the '97 blooper reel to the blooper reel from this thing. Over a decade later, with the main characters being voiced by VAs that do very little voice work, but came back for these specific roles. It's absolutely stunning. And Casca's VA seems like such a fun/awkward/weird person. I can imagine myself in a room chatting with them in a group and having a fantastic time. The vibe is incredible.

58:54 It is that kind of anime. The movies just removed 90% of it. This is why the movies are trash compared to the animes and the manga. They remove every scene where Guts is monologuing and thinking. And they remove his backstory and remove any scenes about Guts inner thoughts, feelings, beliefs. They do the same with Griffith as well. The movies basically rush through everything and remove anything not absolutely crucial to the plot. Also, the music is mostly trash. The animes have the good music.

And Guts turning down that guys offer to become a squire was not practical. It was plain stupid and showing how troubled Guts is. He would rather struggle as a poor mercenary over becoming a well paid squire and maybe even become a rich knight that would "feed him".

@So you've started this, this is epic but you should also check out Claymore, as an anime it's very similar, just better. Oh, it's the CGI, nevermind!😅 So glad Claymore was never butchered like this!🤣🤣 Or rather it's an anime CGI combination like Kingdom... weird, not sure I remember this.🤔 (moments later) Looks good tbw, let's see how much through the series it will keep up.🙂 @So we get to your question "Why does this look so good but the soldier fights so shit!?" Because that is anime and the soldier stuff is CGI, not enough budget for animation lol. But the original Berserk from '99 is all animation, but not as good solo fights as this, the fights here are improved, remastered of sorts. @Crimson Behelit, a superior Behelit than normal as that (Zod!?)beast had when it was human.😉 When that Crimson Behelit opens up, it's one of the bad assest scenes in anime's history, all rather television history for those who've seen it. Claymore has more than one scenes like that, but not quite like that, that scene stands alone. @You watch it in the English dub, sometimes the laughter is silly, the Japanese version much better. Japanese do godlike voice acting at all times, the English dub doesn't measure.
