I have the JawHorse, I can place my 1/2" plywood into the JH when I need a bench worktable and use my hand clamps to hold down what I'm working on or use the JH for bigger heavier jobs, it's like having 2 in 1.

Very practical comparison. Thank you for sharing this. I can see uses for both - now that you have shown me how - so will likely get both.

I have both. I first bought a used WorkMate at a thrift store for $5. It is one of the most useful tools in my shop! I put casters on it and can easily wheel it anywhere I need additional workspace. I drill pocket holes, sand, paint and finish, and do small assemblies on it. I am working on a router table top to use on it. The Harbor Freight version of the JawHorse is used for holding pallets and pallet boards while I disassemble them and prepare them for projects. I have also used it to hold the end of a large bookshelf project while we were assembling. I think the WorkMate is far more useful.

Jay Davis, That was very useful!... A well made Video and comparison, also well narrated... (Thankfully with no annoying music!) .. I was considering buying a Jawhorse, but after i saw your Video i think i can make the Workmate work adequately for my needs (Clamping a peice of Wood for Carving) ... I can figure out some some minor tweaks!... Thanks again!

Nice informative review Jay, I have both the Workmate and JawHorse, the Workmate is more useful and easier to set up and store where the JawHorse is to heavy and and is hardier set up is use and store. I ended up selling the JawHorse. I own several Workmates for my work needs, I see Workmates all time at yard sales at very cheap prices and you can find parts on ebay. If you get a chance look up the history on the Workmate. Looking at yours I can tell you yours is a one of the early models. Workmake also made workmate bench model. The older Workmates are made in the good old USA. Take care

I have 3 jawhorses & 4 workmates. They each have uses that are better fitted for certain types of projects. I use the jawhorse the most. Just don't forget to remove the rubber pads if you do welding. (Don't ask me how I know.) I just discovered that the jawhorse is the world's best soda/beer can crusher! It crushes 2 or 3 at a time to about 1/4 inch thick round pucks.🤗👍 You put them in the jaws, slide the jaws to put light pressure & start pumping the foot pedal. Five pumps is all it takes. You do NOT have to put the locking button on. Just push the jaw back & retrieve your can.

Yes you can use the jawhorse for a traditional sawhorse. Just slide the movable vise jaw all the way off.
@jaydavis3352 Жыл бұрын
I found the surface to be a little slippery and when I say "traditional sawhorses", I'm thinking of when you can take two sawhorses and throw a sheet of plywood on it to make a table. That doesn't work so well with the vise part of the jaw horse sticking up.
@Bob_Adkins Жыл бұрын
@@jaydavis3352 OOPS! I forgot that 1 end is fixed. Haven't used it in months! My DeWalt saw harses are a bit slippery too, with anodized aluminum surfaces. Maybe I should top them with grippy hard rubber.
@jaydavis3352 Жыл бұрын
thanks for the follow up. Slipper sounds dangerous for the top of saw horses. I use that rubbery drawer liner stuff when I want to add some grip to things.

Awkward is right... Just broke 2 fingers putting it away. Its useful but I wish it were lighter and more portable. I'm not a small guy but I hate dragging this thing out almost as much as my 26' folding ladder...

I use mine in the garage all the time, but don't like moving it. It is pushing the limit on weight to be called "portable", and there are some pinch points.

You’re right, depends on what you want to do. My Jawhorse holds a full size door. Won’t trythat on my workmate 79-003 but it holds small pipe and tubes delicately but securely. Plus, you forgot to show the roller on the jawhorse so once folded up you can tow it around like a roll around suitcase. I think they are different enough that it’s not really fair to compare them. What’s better, a pipe wrench or a crescent wrench?

Hey Jay thanks for the quick review. I currently have the workmate and considering adding the jawhorse. The workmate is cgood for quick stuff and isn't too bad to store but on a jobsite or setting up workstations(chop saw, table saw, etc) looks like it would work out better. I'm curious have you ever set up the jawhorse as a makeshift workbench by putting some MDF or laminated plywood in the clamps to have a quick work table? Thanks again for the review
@jaydavis33524 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for your feedback. I think you will find both the WorkMate and the JawHorse both very valuable, and investing in either - or both - is an investment you won't regret. I had a sliding miter saw set up on a JawHorse for a while. It worked, but you would need two people to set it up and take it down, as it's hard to balance on one foot while releasing the jawhorse vise and simultaneously holding a heavy, awkward sliding miter saw. In my opinion, I think it would be easier to set the saw on the WorkMate, then maybe use a couple of C-clamps to hold it down. But again, that's just my opinion, and I haven't used either of these platforms outside of my garage environment, so set up/tear down is not something I do alot of. Another option you might look into is a "folding miter saw stand". These have quick-release mounts to make setting up and taking down your power tool easier.and could be used for power tools other than a miter saw. Thanks again for your comments and be safe - Jay
@TheBeowulf554 жыл бұрын
@@jaydavis3352 oh yeah I never thought about setting the chop saw on the workmate that makes sense. I've looked into the folding miter saw stations but haven't found one that collapses small enough but I might not be looking hard enough 🙄. I just picked up the jawhorse today and already loving it. I have to be portable and I don't have a large dedicated workshop yet so almost everything has to be temporary and portable right now. Thanks again for the review and responding to my comment! 😁

I got mine (Rockwell brand) for around $100 on special. There is a "SheetMaster" version which can open a full four foot, which cost quite a bit more.
@Laughinghawg Жыл бұрын
@@jaydavis3352 Hey Jay, I have been considering something like these two items. Is there a configuration/way to set up that either one work with a full sheet of plywood? I have narrowed down my choices to the sheetmaster but really don't need to spend $320ish since I only use it every so often, but when you need it, you need it if ya know what I mean. The lesser expensive ones seem to max out at about the 37" range in width capacity and harbor freight has one for a $100ish, but you have to be careful about which items you get from harbor.

@@jaydavis3352 Hey Jay, thanks for the quick response. Since I'm just a "professional Homeowner" 😁 and don't need it that often, just trying to minimize my expenditure. Dealing with large "stuff" like plywood sheets(all 48" of it) is a pain in the backside without the right setup and I don't have the right setup. I may have to just bite the bullet for the $320 or wait till it goes on sale. I appreciate the link for the one for $228.
