Thanks for the videos, I will watch the progress with interest. They have certainly cracked on with cutting away the embankment.

They never remove the OHL equipment on this sort of job, there's no need to.

They wilprobably lay a surface for it to Skid on. The rams to push it are already in place at the back of the bridge.

Is this underbridge for rail or road access to-the freight depot?
@masekwm
@masekwm 12 күн бұрын
It is both, will allow construction traffic through but then will be a two line feed into the freight depot.

I presume all this work is being done as part of the move to reap the benefits likely to be conferred from HS2 i.e. freeing-up of capacity on the GNR line, consequent upon movement of passenger traffic to HS2 and taking trunking freight traffic off of the North/South roads. From memory the powers that be first tried to do this at Denham, West London, with the Charter Rail project, which proposed a depot facility for roll-on/roll-off railcar transport of articulated lorries (But nothing came of that). I take it that the new facilities that will be built here will be straight rail to warehouse and vice versa.

Maybe one day, but that will require further phases of HS2 - or similar - to be funded.

Back when the midland built the london extension, where did they get the soil 😮

@@paulbarber1960 they usually planned the lines so that embankments were made from the soil excavated from cuttings. In those days the had contractors Railways to haul the muck. The same system is being used on HS2 but using dump trucks running on a dedicated haul road.

To a non-railway person, this looks like the same sort of job as done on GWR recently - cutting a hole in the embankment to facilitate the sliding-in of a pre-fabricated bridge. The question is why ? What's the bridge for ? Its definately worthy of a wow for the civil engineering. That a major transport artery like this can be severed, major alterations made and the whole lot restored and re-instated to normal operation within a few days, is fantastic.

The Radlett Strategic Rail Freight Depot is to be built on the fields behind the railway, the bridge will allow construction traffic under railway and will form the access for the railway into the site once it is built. It’s amazing that they can move such a huge structure.

Very grey-belt 😊 The huge freight siding complex is being built on what was the Handley Page aircraft site. After the ground was cleared, stone and sand were quarred. So, a polluted site gets clean and reused..
