Well I did eventually find this bloke. He is a good teacher as he is not a word merchant. Straight to it. So, there is no quick way to sharpen a serrated knife or honning it up. Just don't buy a serrated knife. That's a joke!! Serrated knives are the best at cutting bread. There is no other way to sharpen/hone these knives. Than by one serration at a time. It is a cow of a knife edge but the only blade to really cut into crusty bread and not slip taking a slice of hand flesh with it instead. Yes we women will even be able to do it. Sometimes the only one in the house. If you have a sensible 24 year old, sometimes a bit younger, 15. It can be done. So 38 serrations later I have a sharp bread knife. Ladies I know you think it is the sharpest knife in the draw but please don't cut the ham or Turkey with it. Best use a lovely sharp flat knife is best for that. Why,? Because it will rough up the slice of meat that should look flat and smooth like the skin of a tomato. I'm 80 years old, never too old to learn.

"you will have raised a Burr" if you raised a burr, that means you sharpened it.

BRILLIANT. Thank you so much. My bread knife hasn’t cut well for ages. Thought I would need a special tool/jig. I already had a burr so a few strokes on the steel and it’s sorted Magic x. You get a sub for that. Thank you xx

Your title says honing steel or ceramic. How do you use a honing steel? My honing steels have striations that run lengthwise, so they are intended to sharpen along the blade, not in a groove. I believe it can be done, but please comment.

The goal when using a honing steel or ceramic rod is to stand the rolled peaks on serrations back up, similarly when you hone a straight edged knife, you are not removing material as much as pushing it back into alignment. To truly sharpen the serrations you would need to use something like a diamond rod. That said, honing steels do sometimes have those striations and they will work to stand up the rolled peaks but you may end up leaving those striation marks in each of the grooves of your knife.

Hi, great video! Can you please share the grit of the ceramic rod and the diamond rod that you used in the video, or what grit you recommend for each of those respectively? Looking online, there is everything under the sun as far as range of grit for either of those too. Thanks again again, your video was a lifesaver.

So you’re doing the flat side and not the beveled side first, then your rod has to fit the gullets as I’m understanding your video. Is that correct?

I'd like to get a tip on how to sharpen a pizza wheel or rotary blade. This one's great, though!

ill add that you can sharpen most anything on a stone. they're a wonderful tool to have.

I am running into the same problem. I’m thinking about using sandpaper at 400 grit and then working my way up to 1000. I’m not sure. I guess you just do minor turns on the wheel and sand outward although it’s tempting to turn the wheel with the sandpaper or Whetstone pressed against the blade, the curved side.

Sharpen on a flat stone. 16 to 18°. Lift the handle slightly as if you were sharpening the belly of a knife. Move from the top of the stone to the bottom in a straight line. If the wheel turns by itself, you’re doing it right.

Wouldn't it be better and easier to move the sharpening tool rather than the blade?

Can you explain how to sharpen a full convex grind like most bark river knives or a Falkniven F1 with the work sharp Ken onion Edition with the bga? Thank you very much.

This seems much faster than what I do...but how do you maintain a consistent angle on the knife just free-hand holding it like that?
@WorkSharpOutdoor3 жыл бұрын
The larger bevel cut in for a serration is easier to feel by hand but it is a learned skill to follow the bevel perfectly. Sharpening just the tip of the serrated edge, and not grinding the entire bevel face can save time and create a micro bevel. Personally that's how I handle my serrated knives.

My boss won't let me take my knives to work. The knives at work are so dull that I worry I'm going to hurt myself. Thank you for this.

Video was excellent about how to sharp a serrated knife. Bit if Work Sharp wants to be taken seriously it is important to know the pronunciation of the object they are discussing. The word "serrated" is pronounced SER-ay-tid. FYI...
