You will want to clean the engine fins properly so the engine can cool during operation and check the rear end. There is usually a bunch of debris that builds up around the hydro rear-end. How difficult would it be to put a 3 point hitch on a 317? Mine didn’t come with, but I do see that they are available. Would love to see a video on a full 3 pt build, with additional hydraulic ports and some type of conversion from belt driven PTO to spline shaft. Would be a game changer for implements.

Hi, thanks for asking this great question! I know there are aftermarket 3 point hitch systems out there and for a John Deere 317 they are cheaper than any 318 or 400 series John Deere. The reason for that is, the 317 uses the lift cylinder to lift the 3 point hitch from the deck lift cylinder in between the frame rails. To mount an aftermarket system you'll probably get instructions and this should probably up to 30 mins. I'm not planning on mounting a 3 point onto the 317 as I have a 3 point on the JD400, so I won't be able to share any videos about that. Talking about the PTO: The front PTO is an electro-magnetic clutch that will allow you to drive a mower deck, snow blower or power broom. It doesn't really make any sense to change this to a pto shaft, because all you attachments must be altered. For the back, there is a shaft driven double-pulley option for a rear mount rototiller. I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for...? If you intend to have multiple upgrades like the ones you're mentioning, you might want to find a JD318 that has all of these features. This might be your cheapest option at the end of the day! I hope this information helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask! Regards Andreas

One comment, it is my understanding that the sight tube you replaced on the axle was supposed to include the, what you called a filter, which they say is actually a vent with a tiny hole in it that should be put upward to allow the hydraulic fluid to flow when adding fluid. What can you tell me about that?

Hi there! The John Deere 317 does not have a traditional 3 point hitch, but there are conversion kits out there to replicate this function. On this tractor you have a central lift cylinder for your deck and this mechanism is attached to a flat bar that reaches to the back of the garden tractor. This will allow you to raise & lower a rototiller, but that's about it. I hope this helps!

I have 4 317’s 1 is a parts machine. 2 are repowered with the Briggs and Stratton 18hp and the other one is a None running all original KT 2 that I bought from original owner with all the paperwork since new including the engine replacement in the 90’s

Repowers are great especially if they had the KT-Series 1 engine and hopefully you can get the all original KT-Series 2 up and running again. It would add a lot of value to your collection, especially with the paperwork. My hydraulics to raise and lower the cutting deck will not work. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

The system hydraulics for your cylinders or even your auxiliary hydraulics stems from the charge pump. This is the small cover (marked LH/RH) that is bolted directly to the main hydraulic pump on the rear end. Your charge pump creates pressure and sends fluid to your valve block, where you can activate your hand levers. Once activated your will have pressure diverted to your deck cylinder or with the other lever to your auxiliary hydraulics. To test your system it would be great to hook up a cylinder to your auxiliary hydraulics, just to see it that works. If not, then you know you have an issue with your charge pump (internal damage or even just worn parts). If your pump works on the auxiliary hydraulics, then your could have a bad deck cylinder. With KT17, can the fuel pump be changed with the intake manifold and carb in place? I see a snap ring in my bag of parts with the new fuel pump (the original lasted up until now since new!) and wasn't sure where I could get snap ring plyers down in there. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

I believe you will have to pull the carb off. There is really not much room down between the intake manifold, carburetor and mechanical fuel pump. I just had to pull the carb off the JD317 the other day before I did some tilling as the fuel clogged the float needle. (bad fuel obviously).

@@WorkshopRebuild I have cleared that by spraying compressed air into the fuel inlet line after the pump before the carb. One short blast and it clears the plug and you are up and running. Went several years (I work my tractors very hard) only needing to blow it out about once-twice a year before finally rebuilding. My carb is frozen to my manifold on the original 317. Any tricks on seperating them???

That's really a good way to free up the carb and it does work. For some reason I don't have much luck with the fuel quality lately. It seems like it's always getting worse and my carbs do NOT like it! If you want to remove the carb from your manifold, I'd try some penetrating oil and if that doesn't work you could always try a heat gun. I hope this works for you.

@@WorkshopRebuild Thanks! Try taking your gas cans to the local (small airport). You can purchase 100LL and never have a problem again. Leave it in years and still good with no damage to carbs or rubber.

317 isn’t a bad tractor but the engines weren’t the strongest but they seemed to improve the engine with the series 2 Kohler dramatically

The engine has just over 17 HP actually, so there should be enough power for most of the implements designed for this tractor. I wouldn't know how it handles a rototiller with an extension...but I'll see here once I rebuild it! Best regards
