It's definitely nerve wracking thinking about tanking. I've been a healer for so long but I may give it a shot
@jellybeansugarbender91107 жыл бұрын
Definitely give it a try. I was the same way. Healer is always my main but I really wanted to learn the other classes. And it made me a better healer for sure. Now I know what all the CDs do and look like. But I really find that if you're freaked out and you just tell people "hey I'm new" people seem better cool with helping you out and maybe holding off the dps alittle until you learn. We always need more tanks :)
@exiledvoid24297 жыл бұрын
COREcasual Well tanking is much easy than healing because your only most consern is to generate Agro / Enmity / Hate toward your opponent and chill on a corner keep poking.... kinda that's it. Offen the high work load is the healer always keep monitoring the Tank hp and some crazy DPS's, not to mention those DPS that love to poke while the tank is in the process of pulling the mobs
@exiledvoid24297 жыл бұрын
Work To Game I find tanking is easy because i first started on the game as DPS on ARC / BRD and as a dps kinda keep avoiding every aoe offen, and on the process of grinding my anima from 230 to 240 on that time i the queing on duty is eternity that is why i level up my MRD / WAR just for the reason of farming tomestones. Then on tank useally just pull and poke chill on one corner and also that apply on Weeping City to

I can say only ever playing DPS until recently, amongst the three combat brackets (DPS, Tank, Heal of course) Healing is the only one that gives me heart palpitations LOL. Maybe it didn't help that my first serious attempt at healing was SCH in Sastasha Hard with that first bitchy Scorpion boss haha. Group wiped a couple times and it was my fault, God I hated myself. I'll DPS/Tank any day. Healing more than any other Job did help me notice what all players are doing in a dungeon run though. Glad I've chosen to at least try at being proficient in all three areas of combat, it's helped me notice and appreciate what everyone has to deal with. If only all players did this, there'd probably be a lot less anger going on in end game content. Pretty much the only time where the game reaches any real level of difficulty. Ex Primals and Raids ain't no DF dungeon runs... >_>
@EugeneClaudeVanDamme7 жыл бұрын
COREcasual The Gladiator/tanker is my class and my very first one I didn't know too much about it until my friends have told me. for me starting and doing dungeons that I just did not too long ago can be nerve racking in a way. but once you keep flashing the enemy and throwing your shield at them. your team will engage and of course one of them will have to heal you. I've been flashing then as the enemy came to me. and you will get some people telling you just watch youtube about tanking basically talking shit. when you have been saving their asses and letting the enemy focuse on you. so you'll probably have some dumbasses. but personally I love being the Gladiator I think you might like it.
@kalthramis11457 жыл бұрын
You should also mention that PLDs excel at mitigating physical damage, DRK excel at mitigating magic damage, and WARs don't excel at either, but can comfortably handle both due to their large healthpool. That's a pretty important difference between the 3.
@kalthramis11457 жыл бұрын
They do, as they're flat-damage reductions. That said, Magic damage is not a PLD's forte. Ex., in Niddhog Ex, Plds rarely live through the 3rd magic attack from the east add.

One of the best aspect of FFXIV is story. I for sure wouldn't skip cut scenes to watch them on you tube. It's not the same level of immersion. You also only watch those CS once, so dont make such a big deal out of it.

+BartekSWT I'm glad it's an option, but I tend to enjoy the cut scene as well. But hopefully that means we won't get a lot of dungeons filled with them like we did at the end of ARR. :S

It's really eased me through the early dungeons. I'm still stressing over getting lost or not knowing a mechanic, not to mention just doing something wrong, but I'm growing more confident slowly. Hey, stumbled on your video. Good stuff man. I have been playing FFXIV for a couple of months, but I've played almost every MMO out there since 1997. In MMOs that have the "Holy Trinity" in place, I have rarely ever not played a tank. I love tanking and try to encourage more people to try it. If you make another, more advanced guide, I'd recommend talking about stance dancing. I main a PLD and when I came over from both WoW and SWTOR, I found that tanking here was very different. Again, good guide. You got a new subscriber!

hey some other tips Brian you may want to mention that paladin is the easiest tank class for starters while warrior and dark knight are more advanced as they have to manage more than just aggro. another thing is foresight is considered the worse gcd as it only boost physical defense so it's useless against magic bosses and adds unlike rampart and shadowskin. I wanted to also mention that gear for tanks is important as well since it helps maintain aggro against higher geared dps still nice guide for beginners.
@twilight4life17 жыл бұрын
I'm generally pretty okay with hate unless the dps is geared higher than me, the problem comes when I pull big. It becomes more than I can manage and I'm not sure what CDs I should be popping for these types of pulls. I don't want to pull small because it's boring and I know people hate it so do you have any tips for end game dungeons and big pulls? I'm playing war

Work To Game 60 i241
@PubstarHero7 жыл бұрын
You crazy about Warrior being advanced. Its just a DPS class with a high HP pool that has skills that generate hate. Its no harder than MNK to play (to me at least). The only issue I have is that sometimes I cant be in Deliverance stance against 270ilvl players when I am floating around 240 myself. Hate gets pulled fast. One thing that should be mentioned is that as a Warrior, you typically get put as Off Tank end game. I know its a beginners guide, but they should know that WAR is really just a DPS class end game that has some tank duties and mechanics (ie Tank Swapping, grabbing adds, or eating meteors)

@OneHenrik3717 жыл бұрын
finalfantasy123 For big pulls on dungeons, specially farming allagan tomestones for your anima weapon (you know faster is better) you have pretty much to spamm your aoe skills that hold hate and always have at least one def CD on, but dont be silly to pull hard with a bad or inexperienced healer, great part of the job to maintain you alive comes from him. You will find yourself having really problems especially with astrologians (no matter their ilv) because they always prefer to burst heal you. WAR 269 here.

Although, I probably should have started with this...I'm just going to take my time and the info from this page and maybe find a mentor in game. I've heard good and bad things about the community for FFXIV. Not sure how I feel about the aggressive Free Company Recruitment I mean I'm a level 6 Tank just grinding away killing critters because someone told me critter bits can be sold. So I should kill as many as I can. Seeing as the sites down for updates I will just watch this channel and see what else I can learn.

I actually remember going through an old dungeon (forget which one), and I was going healer for the first time. oh yeah...tanking in ff14. To be honest, i gave up after lvl 67 on my PLD for various reason. The list goes on and on. But, great video^^

These guys have it. As long as you're pulling the agro, you are doing a good job, even if you are going much more slowly than the team would like. I started this game 2 months ago and I've noticed things I could improve on over time. But it took time to realize things like, the more defensive buffs I use, the less stress on my healers, or aoe's do much less damage to a single target but much more gross damage the bigger the pull. After beating arr I tried 2 dps classes and thought they were much more boring because you didn't have to pay anywhere near as much attention to the things going on in a dungeon/raid so long as you were maxing damage output. As a tank, looking out for enemies attacking a party member, being aware of enemy positions, minimizing potential aoe's facing the party, navigating the group down new dungeon corridors, and casting protective abilities on people taking more damage than me is just so much more fun than attack... buff... let me go afk real quick... attack... attack... Going from tanking to dps was a snore.

Should refer to the Emnity as "Emnity" and not "Hate". Could confuse a lot of players not familiar with FFXIV as all the abilities in the game use Emnity in the descriptions. You don't once explain what Emnity is and it is a question a lot of new players ask.

early on... communication is key. if you are nervous or cant hold hate just tell the party. dps can easily adjust rotations to give you some time to build hate. healers do not need to spam heals or do heavy dps. As such they can slow down.

I've only played Gladiator till lvl 25. You should mention the mana management needed. Using flash and other magic skills, go really fast if constantly using it. Tanking in the early game is tough holding threat, hate, enmity. Just go slow at the start.
@jellybeansugarbender91107 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree that tanking under 30 for war/drk and 40 for pld is tough. Sometimes you just get dps that just don't understand as a tank you just don't have the enmity abilities yet to hold aggro. I hope with 4.0 SE makes some changes to low level tanking. I think that for some people they want to tank, but then try it and find it a little overwhelming and they get discouraged. You can only flash and overpower so much (MP and TP run out quickly). Like in the video I always go with 3( in lower level tanking). 3x Flash/Overpower/Unleash followed by cycling your single target attacks through the targets you have aggroed. Easier said then done I know. I wish more people would play tanks so they would understand it's not super easy.

Amazing guides. I really like your tone, and the way that you explain things, and show visuals. I was wondering how you got your hotbar like that, using a controller, with the hotbars above your crossbar. Are they just for show of things that are on cooldown, on other hotbars that can't be seen, so you know what's ready to be used? Or, are they actually functional and extra space for stuff that isn't used too often?
@Work2Game7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marcus, :) Regarding the hotbar above the cross hotbar, that's Hotbar 3, and I use it just to communicate cooldowns. :) My getting started with the controller guides, and job guides highlight that setup, if you're looking to see how it got setup. :) Otherwise, feel free to join me on a stream, and I can show you in real time. twitch.tv/work2game :)

Warriors are the easiest to start with. Higher damage = higher aggro at low levels and earlier tank stance. Plus overpower is simple to use and is alot better than flash. Foresight is great too for mobs. Most enemies do physical damage early on. :)

I wonder if we'll see any changes for the early level content in SB. :)
@dougarmstrong75877 жыл бұрын
Marauder was my first job. The cone is easy to use and I cross class flash so I get an MP and TP enmity aoe. Plus there is no skill that I don't use from it. After it becomes warrior it gets even better. :)
@dougarmstrong75877 жыл бұрын
Yeah a different mentality for tanking both. I have my paladin to level 60. I am all about offense with warrior where paladin kinda makes me more defensive. With that being said I hope they can do something better for paladin in Stormblood.

Work To Game One big change, probably better to call it a bug fix, is that PLD is getting Shield Oath at 30 instead of Sword Oath. I have no idea why it wasn't like that at 2.0 launch, but better late than never.
@dougarmstrong75877 жыл бұрын
They also fixed the double fell cleave bug and you can do 4 now. :) Lol

Paladin are the kings of PHYSICAL mitigation. Cover only works on physical skills. Dark Knight are the kings of MAGIC mitigation. Both mitigate overall damage well, but if you are doing bosses of more specific types, both have their "I'm better than you" spots. Gladiators don't need to cross-class Flash, it's their innate skill. (This is a wording thing, but something I figured I'd nitpick). Foresight is PHYSICAL DEFENSE boosting, not all defenses. Clear that up, for newer players. Flash vs Overpower: Overpower generates WAY more aggro than Flash, and is better to OP 3-4 times after flashing, just to secure hate on trash 100%.
@exiledvoid24297 жыл бұрын
Dathus 146 well if Square enix change flash into a frag granade type skill it will by very usefull to generate emity plus it will have damage also.

That's an interesting cross bar set up. I usually do a right to left set up myself for the default hate combo with the branching combos being on the alternate switch crossbar (usually bar 6 for the combined L/R2 buttons and bar 2 for double tap bar). How does it feel? Because it looks like it would be a lot of work for your thumb to have to maneuver to the right as apposed to starting there in the first place.

For me I think it feels really good and natural, but the point is for everyone to find what works best for them in terms of the feel of the game and where your actions are. Muscle memory is key :)

Great vid. New to ffxiv after 9 years tanking on WoW.. Atm I am running a "human" 30 MDR/15GLD on Excaliber and think Stormblood is a far better game than WoW, which has unfortunately become total garbage, Best part so far in ffxiv is the minimal RNG that has infested Blizzard like a bad case of head-lice ever since that game-cancer Activision ripped the heart and soul out of WoW and turned it into a money grabbing pay-to-win Casino of Shite. New sub, and thanks for the fine tutorials.

I have two issues with this video guide. I don't know if you were doing it on purpose but starting at around the 3:40 mark the tank runs into a set of monsters and promptly sits in the middle of the group. This is a big NO on any tank and my biggest annoyance the couple of times I played on healer. Block and parry ONLY work from the front, you will take an increased amount of damage if you aren't facing your enemies. Secondly as a Warrior(only class at 60), in my opinion, using flash on anything except Paladin is a waste of that slot. If you can't maintain threat on Warrior using overpower then you're playing the class incorrectly. Get used to running through groups of enemies, flipping around on the other side and using overpower. Understand the length and width of the cone on your warrior and practice getting them all in there. If DPS and healers know what they're doing you shouldn't have any problems. (Healers and DPS. If you pull threat, that's cool, I understand wanting to POP right at the start but maybe run towards your tank when you do? kthxbye)

Thanks for sharing your feedback on this topic. :) I'll see if I can't incorporate it into the follow up :)
@lawlesseternal31477 жыл бұрын
Nah I disagree, I think flash is a great ability to have on a war to grab the initial enmity of a group of mobs when your pulling. It helps keep hate for trigger happy DPSers that just can't wait to burst down a mob as soon as the tank starts running towards a group (sigh!!). I believe that instead of me having to gather a group of mobs and then position them for OP, it would be better if I just use flash in the mist of me gathering the mobs and then uses OP. It makes it easier for the dps to go wild with dmg earily while at the same time giving me solid amount of hate.

+Work To Game I've been a dps for years. I definitely want to try out tanking, especially the Dark Knight job class. Though I need a lot of practice on the basics before doing so. Also I heard that the rumoured Samurai Class will be a tank as well in the Storm Blood expansion. I want to have tanking down, especially in higher lvl dungeons, so I'm ready for the Samurai in Storm Blood, when it comes out in June. :)
@cyberkat42677 жыл бұрын
samurai isnt a tank. Stormblood adds 2 DPS. Red Mage is mid-ranged caster and Samurai is a melee dps

Great video Brian. I have subscribed your channel. I will be playing a WAR. Btw, is there a macro for attacking tank's primary target?
@Work2Game7 жыл бұрын
Hey Eric, welcome to the Workforce! :) I'll take a guess as to what you are looking for: /p My New Primary Target Let's bring the hurt! /focustarget /enemysign attack1 /target /p All Aboard the Pain Train! this should mark the target with a 1, and tell the party who you're attacking.

Just getting into FFXIV and thinking about tanking for fast levelling while chasing the storyline. I've heard a lot of things about changes to tanking classes from Heavensward to Stormblood. Just wondering if you could cover some post SB release tips on tanking for beginners with the new changes?

Thanks the help but I don't know how to use the UI. it's so confusing, it took me 20 minutes to put my skills on the bar. I did fairly well yesterday, but I didn't have some of the necessary skills a marauder needs. I didn't have any of the health regen skills. This video was very informative.

T(h)anks for this! I do have a quick question though; I am not completely new to tanking, but wouldn't consider myself 'good' at it either. Yesterday my healer got mad at me for not using flash enough (PLD), she insisted I had to flash once every 5 seconds or so to keep aggro... But I think I shouldn't have to if my DPS (and healer, optional) keeps focusing on what I focus, right? I haven't used the marking before, so I think i'll do that, but I just want to know if this truly was my fault. They did keep focusing whatever they liked.
@Work2Game7 жыл бұрын
I guess the question would be... where you losing hate a lot? The early game is pretty tough, and in the later part of the game, I don't flash that much. If you found yourself losing the hate, then yeah, you might want to flash more often then is fun (the joys of low level tanking) however, I usually just flash once per mob pulled. One thing I do see, is people flash when the enemies aren't around them, which doesn't help get their attention. :( From what you describe, it doesn't sound like you were having an issue on your end. if you mark the targets and focus on the same target then you shouldn't lose the hate, and shouldn't need to flash that much, and thus should all have better dps output as a group. :)

Hey this may be hard right now as your probably still levelling but do you think you can do a mid way tank guide? Say around lvl 60+ primals? I'm newish but I'm finding jumped Tanks in extremes asking why we need to swap.... and not using stances or Shriek

I'm running a dark knight and while I don't think I'm the worse, I definitely feel that I can improve myself. I feel like I really struggle sometimes when it comes to MP management as I tend to be a bit more aggressive, trying to output damage as well as tank to help things go quicker. Anyone who's dinged their DK's, or just know the class, have some advice? My level is 60 by the way, yes yes I know it's a dinged toon, but I know I have room to improve. Would love to hear some opinions or tips from fellow tanks.

So I main a tank in ESO and was thinking about picking up tanking as a starter in this game is it recommended or should I start as dps while learning the basics of the game?
@Zasurein7 жыл бұрын
The only thing I'd disagree with is the macro. You usually want to learn about specific high value enemies to target, and you don't want to encourage people to spam word macros outside of maybe Provoke and revives.

I have a question that's not really related to this video, but I'll just ask it anyway. What's the fastest way to level up a second, third, fourth, ... class? Is it just hunting logs + class quests + Leves for the first 16 levels and then just do Leveling Duty Finder and spam the highest dungeon you can do?
@Marou4467 жыл бұрын
Palace of the dead is fantastic XP starting around level 30 if you're running floors 51+. At that point you are skipping straight to the way down once you don't need any more armor/weapon aetherpool and it's not uncommon to finish 10 floors in 20 minutes or less.

I love keeping agro through dealing aoe damage, and I actually like being on add control in raids, but I've noticed that gladiators only get Circle of Scorn for AoE damage. Do Marauders or Dark Knights get more AoE abilities or do each of the tanking classes play relatively similarly to each other in this respect?
@Work2Game6 жыл бұрын
The takes do play different and at higher levels have different things to manage too.

Love the Vids, I'm a returning player but only made it to level 15 so basicly just a new player, my question is: I wish to tank probably main a dark knight and would like to know anyone's thoughts on should I start with glad or marauder? keeping in mind the possible changes to cross spec coming with storm blood next week as chances are all tanks will get provoke so leveling both classes in a week would be a waste of time.
@Work2Game7 жыл бұрын
Considering the changes, I'd perhaps say, it might be best to just level the job that you find more interesting. Everything is changing, and outside of unlocking the dark knight, you just need to get it unlocked. Personally, I'd vote marauder as it exists for the next few days, but the best plan is to pick one, and level it :)

heey, sorry for necroing an year old video but i want to know your opinion before i delve back into FFXIV. ive been tanking on WoW for quite some time so i have a good understanding of the basics of tanking but with the recent development of WoW i decided its not the game for me anymore and want to pick up FFXIV again but this time on a more serious basis. ive played FFXIV on and off in between. i started as a white mage (ikr, tanking guide and this dude talks about a healer, lol) because that was my main spec in WoW before i decided to start tanking. but after hitting level 50 i changed to dark knight. a month or so before stormblood released i managed to get him to 60 but then quit again (not because of tanking anxiety reasons but because i had no place to call home nor any friends (sadface) to play with). as i previously mentioned i want to get back to FFXIV and pick up where i left with my dark knight. tl;dl i guess my question is would you advice me starting over or just pick up my dark knight again since i already know the basics so its just a matter of learning the class?
