FIDE could have had Armageddon in the rules, but I don't see why they couldn't just make that up at the last minute.. Why choose joint champion instead of that? According to Emil Sutovksy (Chessbaseindia interview), Armageddon was the more preferable choice, but in the end it was President Arkady who gave in to Magnus's request, so there wasn't nothing the rest of FIDE could've done to prevent that. It was President Arkady who bent the knee to Magnus. And as a result people are calling FIDE spineless.

@@JOHNTIM212 That's true. But then Magnus said he was "tired". FIDE could risk angering him again by making him play on, which Arkady clearly didn't want to, not after begging him to come back. They're obviously both sick of fide's general ineptitude. The format is dumb. It should be designed to avoid draws. Fide leadership can't think behind two moves.
@shriyahari985517 күн бұрын
extremely classy move by Magnus to suggest a shared title just before he was playing with white. He knew Nepo deserves a win, and this time really held his own. I think Magnus could have taken Nepo into a deep dark forest of lol 20, 25 draws and slowly ground out a win but...why do that? especially to a friend and respected colleague? there were no tiebreak rules probably because armaggedon doesn't work well with blitz time controls (too short a time? just my guess)... and yes a bunch of troglodytes on twitter or chess24's chat were freaking out about a shared title, but honestly, it's so wholesome and sweet! A win for friendship and camaraderie! (besides lol everyone saw the mighty Magnus go into terminator mode after er.. that unpleasant loss in game 2 of the quarterfinal - and the win in game 3 was the real "who's your daddy?" moment. Duda caught some fallout too lol in the semifinal - just my god, he had such a great tourney and had the misfortune of meeting Magnus in Hulk mode; I think Magnus' first loss against Nepo in the final was when he finally calmed down after losing game 2 *in the quarterfinal*!) my only question is the same gustafsson had: how are they going to lol play blitz next year? who is the defending champion?
