Watching Jearl Miles run these relays is one of my favorite things. She was so brilliant. Such a reliable anchor leg. Never rushed, never ran outside of what she was capable of doing. Just runs so hard and maintains her pace. You can see some of the other runners, even the experienced Russians, going out really hard for the first 200 but really struggling in the last 150m or so. Miles never did that. So strong

Lol, never heard anyone so hyped for 4th place. But this was an indication of things to come as Cathy Freeman would go on to be the 400m Olympic Champion in 2000 on Australian home soil.

ranhill As it turned out, it made a big difference. Got Australia the bronze after Jamaica was disqualified.

intldawn true, but they didn't know that when AUS crossed the finish line.

True. I think they were just impressed with Freeman's impressive leg to give them a respectable result.

The commentators sure didn't give the Americans any props, especially Jearl Miles.

JAM disqualified for crossing over too soon. I wonder if this is why they now place cones at that point on the track...

Why does it seem to be that only the British commentators name all the teams that are taking part? There were 8 teams in that race but they only mentioned 5, shocking commentary.

All the attention was lost to the 4th place Australians. The Jamaican women were overlooked by the commentators

Itsjustlikethat MaCadams Your watching Australian broadcasters at an international event. Their broadcast targets the Aussie people. Would you prefer they say “aww shucks, we suck placing 4th”? There’s a big wide world out there, perhaps you should consider opening your eyes.

Watch the 4x4 with a US commentators and you'll only hear US athletes being mentioned. And I'm sure the same for the German, Russian Cuban......etc comentators

The Aussie 's din't know how to answer on taking a bronze medal ( 12:07 ) knowing that the only way that they got it was from Jamaica's second place DQ. They were not even close other wise. Cathy Freeman did run a good anchor leg ....

Couple of thoughts from a veteran sportswriter. First, you have to know your audience. Of course Australian commentators broadcasting to Australians are going to focus on the Australians. However, it was odd to hear them exulting over splits that would put a US runner on the "B" team.

Robert Hudson Freeman’s split of 49.6 would have won last years US title.
@roberthudson1959

@@PeterMacca88 The last three runners on a relay are already at full speed when their leg starts, so you can't compare those splits to the times from open races. Anchor Carmelita Jeter ran a 9.7 split when the US broke the 4x100 world record, but her best 100 time was 10.64. That aside, Freeman won the open 400 in Sydney. I was referring to the other three.

You can’t compare a 400m and 100m split in a relay. Also USA Has a population of over 300 million . Aus has about 25 or so. Of course there will be a lot more runners available if there is a pool 12 times the size to choose from.
@roberthudson1959
@roberthudson1959 4 жыл бұрын
@@PeterMacca88 OK, here is an example from the 400. Allyson Felix has a career-best time of 49.26. She has run splits of 48.2 and 47.72. As for your second point, number of runners and quality of runners are two different issues, as the Jamaicans have shown.

You obviously didnt follow the athletics back then. Russians were very strong runners and usually swept the indoor meetings. They won some races prior to this comp. It was towards the late 90s when Russians will take the charge for a bit. They were particulary strong in 4×400. It was a direct heat between them and americans
