I think I remember hearing something about this back then. When my cheerleading coach (HS) took over the girls' track team she made us run track and I remember how she made us practice the exchanging of the baton all the time because once we got on the field you better already know which hand you are most comfortable with having the baton, running with it and grabbing it during the exchange. There was no switching of hands allowed.

USA's Reid was so busy trying to switch hands, she never secured the baton in the first place. Not only did she drop it, she knocked it into the infield.

Susan Reid was a great athlete from UT. Won the NCAA 400m but the stick drop was all on her. USA would have easily won if she got the stick. The other 3 legs ran extremely well putting her on pace to run 3:18 which is a top time by world standards even today.

No one knew for sure if the US would have won even the commentators expected it would be a fight to the finish - that being said, it will not be like old times going forward - Jamaica is here now for the women baby - and the men are on their heels in this event too.

Sure, Reid was born in Jamaica but she choose to represent the country she loved; certainly she was devastated that she let her adopted country, teammates and herself down by dropping the baton. Two years later an exciting 18 year old phenomenon (another of Jamaica's gifts to the U.S.A) would hold on to the baton and complete the job in fine fashion, doing her adopted country, teammates and herself proud.

Not true. This was not the first time that Jamaica was winning a relay title for either men or women since we won the 4 x 400 m title in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. That was our first relay title at a global event.

@@jonathanbachman2339 poor choice my friend lol. These four JAM ladies were model citizens. In fact what happened was KARMA in a sense as 3 of them were deprived of the gold medal in the event the previous year at the Sydney Olys when Marion Jones ran a great difference making leg to lead USA to 4 x 4 gold ahead of JAM in a tight finish. Although Marion results from the games were annulled because of doping the USA were allowed to keep their 4 x 4 gold medals which was inexplicable.

Especially since we all know Great Britain's sprinters are not good enough to beat the US Women. Brits should thank Suzy Reid for dropping the baton. The US had this in the bag until then. Another gift to the Jamaicans. If the US men and women can pass the stick properly they would hardly ever lose a race.

If you are talking about the 2015 4x400, I think we can all agree that was a gift to JAM. Sanya Richards Ross and Francena Macorory didn't qualify for the USA 400 flat team and should NOT have run in the final. Current 2017 world champion Phyllis Francis actually made it to the finals, and 400 hurdle silver and bronze medalist Little and Tate would have been better choices.
