I’ve been looking forward to this all day! Unbelievable happenings. I think Ding having a very human moment on a world stage has endeared him to many many new fans. There is an argument to be made that Ding inadvertently raised the stakes on this match even more and if he can manage the stress going forward and actually keep this close. Coupled with Fabi commentating the match. Idk, I think us fans of the great game are in for something really special! Go Ding, Go Nepo, and for that matter go C squared podcast!

While h5 was the best move according to computer if followed up correctly, it was bad practical chess and time management. You see Carlsen often make small improving moves in similar situations - Kg7 tuck in the king, etc.

Brilliant, such a generous present of work and knowledge by you two! Thank you! I was wondering: in such long games, do the players spend all the time (their moves as well as their opponent‘s time) actively thinking about the position? Or do you take calculated breaks where you just rest / relax during the game?
@bughunter1766
@bughunter1766 Жыл бұрын
If you watch these games on the live broadcast, the players almost never are at the table when it's their opponent's time. They walk back and forth like a bunch of caged tigers. I can't explain it. I don't think I've ever seen two players so anxious to get away from the board during the game. Especially this is true for ding. In the one game I want to say he left the table at move four. But once they start thinking, I don't think there's been but maybe five or six moves in the entire seven games where the opposing player stayed at the board. Now I haven't seen every minute of every game, but I believe that's pretty close to true.

I was sure Ding was going to let the clock run completely down. Something in his evaluation was incorrect and this completely terrified him. He thought he had a win when he played h4, but then he saw a refutation, and he panicked and he blanked out. After he did move Rd2, his following moves were all within seconds.
@waldemarmarmar3552

I really do think this is far from over. We still have half of the match ahead and a) Nepo tends to struggle in decisive moments in tournaments (probably even more considering we are reaching final stages of a WCC) b) we learnt from the first seven games that this match is absolutely unpredictable c) this game showed that Nepo is weak. It seems as if Nepo’s prep focused only on Ding’s mainstream repertoire and therefore struggled in games were Ding chose other openings (London and French defense). Buckle up, (even more) fireworks are coming

Regarding why they have a rest day after Game 7, it is to make the match as symmetric as possible. In the first half, one guy has a rest day before playing white. In the second half, the other guy gets to have a rest day before he plays white. This is the fair way to schedule the match. It's also nice to have an extra off day in the middle of the 14-game match. At this highest level, they must make the playing conditions as equal as possible for both players.

man this happens to me all the time. In my head I can hear all the twitch collaborator coaches shouting "MAKE A MOVE" and i'm shouting back "WHAT MOVE?" Then I blunder and lose. Ding probably just thought the position was sharper than it was. Kg7 is a nice consolidating move with 8 pawns and knights on f3/f6, not so typical with heavy pieces on an open board. And actually the more I look the more I really don't want to move anything. Rook is on its best square, Queen is on its best square. Pawns are good, bishop is loose but moving to a different diagonal is the kind of committal decision you'd want to spend time on. These guys are obviously 1000x better than me but really I might have found Bd8, just for lack of alternatives. It's completely understandable that Ding would tank into h4 into resign.

If Fabi was playing he probably would be at 7.5 points in 10 games or less. This is not a championship match. This is a circus - and the players the unwitting clowns. Ian, of course, is back at his old routine : crashes the Candidates then crashes himself under pressure. Just when you thought the lack of self-control in a top player couldn't get any worse, there comes Ding. The most hilarious is one of them will be called "World Champion" at the end of this.
