World Cup Shirt Stories: England 1982 Away

In the run up to the 2018 World Cup in Russia we are taking a look back at some of the strangest shirt stories. We start with England's famous Admiral 1982 away shirt worn in Spain.

I love CFS and have bought a lot of items from you. I love wearing an obscure shirt to confuse my kickaboot chums hehe Now I thought that after the 1st game v France, England players said that the nylon Admiral shirts were too hot and sticky, itchy and wanted Aertex versions for their next game which was against Kuwait! I'm presuming the next time Red was worn was v West Germany in the 2nd phase and that these were Aertex too? I'd love one of those shirts For the record I thought England had a good squad in 82, remained unbeaten and had beaten semi finalists France 3-1......if only Keegan and my fave player Sir Trev had been fit?! I had a home 82 shirt as a 13 year old for that World Cup.......nice shirt, smooth nylon, if only I had kept it! Keep up the good work!

I love that predecessor red top you have on. Its not one I think we wore much, apart from a defeat against Brazil in an international friendly. We did use it for a qualifying match against Bulgaria in Sofia. The Admiral logo on that one looks as if it had been left over from the Leeds United shirts or Palace & Tottenham change tops from the late 1970s..... The 1980-83 shirts were our most spectacular and smart shirts, if a little ostentatious and bright. But this was the 1980s to be fair....

The detailing on the white shorts was different also - variegated red and blue stripes against France and equal width red and blue stripes versus West Germany (much like the ones worn with the previous admiral 74-79 kit). England also used the older sytle admiral socks with just the 2 bands on the turnover rather than the ones with the admiral logo repeating on the turnover.

It was common for shorts and socks to have been mixed up with the "older" varieties. Same thing happens with the yellow/black kits worn by Clemence and Shilton during that era.

I've only recently treated myself to a remake of the 1980/83 England Home Football Shirt by Admiral Sportswear in size 3XL on ebay, the first time ever I've added a Classic 1980's Retro England Football Shirt by Admiral Sportswear, since my days collecting England Football Shirts by Umbro and Nike. And yes, the Admiral logo is on the shirt to which I'm wearing now

82 Shirt is a Classic to wear for walking . I love CFS : Im a Vintage Shirts Fan,I dont really like nowadays Shirts except some whic h are not bad. I have the England 98 Home Shirt and Navy UMBRO Polo of the same year. The 2002 Home Shirt,Liverpool 2008/09 Away Shirt(green) Newcastle Home 2009/10 but Id love to order the 1999/00 or 2003/05 I was given by a Former Cameroonian International The Boro 2002/03 Home Job's Name on the back. I have the Cameroon 2006/08 Home Shirt and Ive just received the Spurs 2001/02 Home Shirt. I also like to have the England 98 away shirt ,Sweden 94 Home Shirt

Anyone know anything about a sky blue version of this kit.I bought one a couple of years ago and was told it was the 3rd kit taken over but not used but havent been able to verify this.

Recently, I was watching a Big Match Revisited from 1974 at Gillingham's Priestfield Road (we happened to live just a few streets away that particular year). Anyway, Charlton were visiting, wore white and won by a single goal. The white strip had red markings under the sleeves, but clearly, you can see the only player wearing a white shirt without the red markings just happens to be the goalscorer Keith Peacock. I'm thinking he might have needed a replacement top, having had the shirt torn during the game kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4DIaoagitGMgNE

For some strange reason the FA has decided to produce non-Admiral badged retro version of the gorgeous '76 change England shirt on display here, which only seems to be in Sainsbury's stores (not even on the FA England internet store!). This is the same Sainsbury's that also have a deal to sell Admiral branded sportswear...WTF????????????????????

It seems score draw have taken both those variations as their inspiration for the 1982 away shirt! Either that or they were too lazy to print different top panels for the away version.

Of the two versions, the red one worn against France looks so much better than that daft "double white" banded variant worn against W Germany.

@@andrewphippsphillips1455 agree entirely. It was never supposed to be a double stripe of course, just how they managed to produce the airtex version at short notice.

Good point that. Even if the game was broadcast to some parts of the globe in monochrome, the dark French shirts and white English shirts could never have clashed. It may have been Adidas promoted their French change kit, knowing the other 2 teams France would have been facing, wouldn't have meant they used white, as Kuwait and the Czechs were in red.
