World exclusive!! The Tesco RAD-108 worldband portable price has increased to £9!

As of 2022 the radio is still sold for £9. The DSP tuning is a little awkward, but the radio is quite sensitive on SW. You may think it’s a deaf radio on SW indoors, but take it with you to the park or somewhere away from RF noise and it really pulls in the stations. I took mine on trips to Scotland and Bridlington. Bridlington appeared to be a bit dead on FM, but the SW bands were completely alive. I could only get about 5 stations on FM in my car.

@@OxfordShortwaveLog You can easily catch China, Romania or Turkey on this radio. The Lidls brand Silvercrest SWDR 500 C1 is also quite good on SW too, it doesn't have direct frequency tuning but you can tune up and down and get it on the correct frequency quite easily. It’s a bit like the Retekess V-111.

@@MrBrian8749 With me in my situation as regards my job Brian I lost it in 2014 through ill health, and was dismissed for the use of a better word. I had given them 30 years constant night shift. The writing was on the wall from the early 2000s, and we were taken over by a Canadian finance company. Needless to say that they did away with our terms and conditions and holiday benefits and did away with pension scheme. Next followed migrant agency workers with no fixed contract. Anyway Brian they achieved their goal and eventually got rid of all of the full time Scottish workers, and it took them about 10 years to achieve this making it a cheap agency run manufacturer. Anyway Brian I am kept occupied with the dog, and getting out of the house. Wierdly I now mostly listen to MW or LW these days as we have plenty of people your good self included with great content on KZbin. @@b.2221 The only health problem I have is my back and shoulder. Everything else is in good working order (and I mean everything)LOL I have chronic pain and unable to work anymore. In Germany workers are protected from situations such as yours by law. Many companies are using leasing firms to hire people (migrants ) now. they work 14 months then fire them or give them a contract. Of course they don't give out contracts anymore. Tam take care

Here is an update on the World Band Radio. My local Tescos are not stocking them anymore, it's not just out of stock it's been discontinued. As is the £6 AM/FM pocket radio. I also checked out their web page and said it isn't available there either. As far I can tell the radio was the only off the shelf SW Radio you can buy locally. Argos, Morrisons, Aldi, Boyes and B&M do not stock a radio with the SW band on them. Lidls sometime sell a multiband radio, but not all of the time. So that means the only place to purchase a SW radio is on the Internet. You may say that's no big deal, but if there is a crisis the first things to get shut off will be TV and the internet and other communications. And you won't be able to go to a shop locally to purchase a radio capable of receiving shortwave stations.

@@OxfordShortwaveLog That's a frequency from the earliest days of radio. I was born and raised in the UK but now American and can remember as a child regularly listening late at night (often after doing some SW listening on my homebuilt receiver) to "Sailing By" followed by the Shipping Forecast which was so different to the usual weather reports, very formal and BBC and British with those interesting terms and exotic locations and yet at the same time I found the music and words to be somehow very reassuring and comforting. Everytime I went back to the UK I deliberately made a habit of tuning in again to 198 KHz late at night, and it being an instant and powerful memory trigger to my childhood. It's as inextricably British as The Archers, which I understand is also still running, and was another radio favorite from childhood through to adulthood, (the daily episodes and the omnibus edition!). Many years ago as a kid, I was given an old valve radio - it belonged to my Great Grandmother and the tuning scale indicated wavelength rather than frequency. The BBC used to broadcast on 1500 metres I think which is a slightly higher frequency of course. As a kid I used to listen to the World Service on MW through the night and rock music on Saturday afternoons on one of the French stations on LW back in the day, recording them onto cassette! The Archers are still going and 'Sailing by' + The Shipping Forecast still have that hypnotic, send you to sleep quality! I hope it never changes. Merry Christmas to you too! 73! Clint

Thinking of getting this mainly for FM and AM occasionally SW with antenna clip it has some awful reviews on the Tesco site a fair few saying it stopped working after a week, is the FM/AM reception decent with a decent tone? And seems yours has lasted a few years? There are no UK sellers for the Tecsun r909 at the moment so this looked like an option also battery life? Thanks.
