the bowler was also a staple im Mexican fashion, during the Porfiriato it was worn by the Catrines, high class men, and now is used in Dia de Muertos as part of the costume.

I'm 17 years old and people might think it's weird that I'm wearing a hat that's old but I don't care what they think. I really love these hats from you know the olden days even if they're not relevant.

Sounds like a soon to be steampunk or dieselpunk. I was also a fan of hats and kinda fell into it. Be careful you don't end up like me with over 20+ hats, hahaha.

@@j.t.1215 I really do look good when I wear the bowler :D . From an early age, I just really admire hats especially older ones. I feel the same whenever I see someone wear a hat that really no wears anymore.

These were worn in town but not as much on the prairie. There simply wasn't enough sun protection. Study photos of *working* cowboys from the 1870s and 1880s. Not photos of Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp, who weren't cowboys.

Yes, there are plenty of examples in both directions. I am not claiming sombreros or Stetsons were made up by "Big Hat" or something. I was simply stating in the confines of a Bowler Hat video that it was very popular and prevelant during that "Wild West" time and in many sources it is called the "Real Hat that won the west". You are correct. It's impractical for long days spent out on the range. As with that time period, there were many, MANY hats and one day I will get around to the sombrero, Stetson, and other styles that were seen in the American West. Thank you for ensuring no one was mislead.

?????? I thought and heard (while traveling through England 20 years ago) that the hat was made for soldiers? Love the hat and the history. One of my favorites. Thank you. Be good.

It may have been, but in my research for this 101 I never saw reference to it being apart of a military uniform or anything that specifically linked it with soldiers. It is a 101 so maybe that is something I can look into for more of a deep dive.

@LandshipScorpios
@LandshipScorpios 5 жыл бұрын
For the most part, no. I, personally, go off of some old website's description of a Bowler has a lower crown and it more rounded while a "Derby" has a higher crown looking like a rounded top hat. The truth of the matter is, "no". It has different names based on locations but there isn't a whole lot of difference that is universal across hat makers. Each store or hatter has different names for different styles the sell. Generally "Derby" is American and "Bowler" is European and "Bombin" is south american and there's also "Billycock" that I cannot locate. If you can find any sort of honest rulesets on different styles they would be really helpful for these kinds of videos. :)

@@LandshipScorpios yes there was no many differences between bowlers/derby,they were basically the same thing,bowler was coming from the hatmakers for the lock co hatters,thomas bowler,while the american one was the hat was wear during the derby horse race,there is one style of bowler,its called a cambridge bowler,its look like a topper,but in the past topper were made out of beaver felt that had been carroted and polished or silk plush,i love vintage/antique bowlers made by dunn co and christys hatters,also you proved your points of it nevers come off,its very true!i wear them when its so windy and its keeping pressed to my head

Sorry , a REAL cowboy , who works outside (often for weeks on end) would most definitely choose a traditional wide brim , Western style cowboy hat. To keep the sun off his face and neck , and also to channel the rain over the collar of his trench coat and behind him . Now , a bowler hat may have been a more popular hat . And I'm sure many cowboys owned a bowler to go with their Sunday best . For the days they want to dress up and go to town. But EVERY COWBOY worth his salt , wore a wide brim Western style cowboy hat most days . Because for men , a hat isn't a fashion statement , it's a tool to help them get thru endless hard days of work life.

Ha. Well I did not know that. All I had to go off of was my own experiences and films and the like. This is a sweet tidbit to learn. I will remember this in the future. I guess it's just proof I do have an accent, haha. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for the info.
@NilsAlbertsson
@NilsAlbertsson 6 жыл бұрын
@Landship Scorpios You're welcome. Also, here's another one... _"tidbit"_ was originally pronounced _"titbit"_ and still is in the UK and Ireland where it originated. It was deliberately changed to _"tidbit"_ by puritan colonists in America around the early part of the 17th century because they considered the middle English _"tit"_ part, too rude... Tit in old and middle English simply means _"small"_ (the tit refering to breasts was spelled _"titt"_ which is derived from _"teat"_ and is unrelated )... Titbit, then, simply means _small bit,_ Funnily enough, the word _"bit"_ is actually derived from the old English (Anglo-Saxon) word, _"biti"_ meaning _"small."_ This means that the original middle English word titbit, actually means, rather nonsensically, _"small-small"_ whereas the deliberately changed word _"tidbit"_ actually makes more sense... This is because _"tid"_ in old English means _"tasty morsel"_ which would make the Americanised _"tidbit"_ mean, _a small tasty morsel._ Which makes more sense. I don't know why I'm telling you all this... Oh yeah, you said _"tidbit"_ in your previous post.... I'm not a nerdy weirdo, I have a wife and kids, honest! Lol.

This guy is fake news. The cowboy hat came out of mexico, i can prove it w my own heitage. My ancestors originated in spain and brought their traditions to new spain and one of them colonized south texas and he wore a cowboy hat in the 1700s... it looked a bit different though. Interesting. Thank you for your history. However, I fail to see how it disproves anything in my video. Everything In this video is backed up by several websites. If you would like to articulate what exactly is "fake news", I would be interested in learning as well as admit I am wrong. These videos are supposed to be 101s on the hats in question and not an end-all-be-all guide to everything the hat has to offer.

Landship Scorpios okay, the "cowboy hat" came out of northern mexico out of mexican vaqueros. The "american cowboy" is a copy of the mexican vaquero, chaps, cowboy boots, saddle horns, cowboy spurs came out of mexico. Your cherry picked information is really funny kzbin.info/www/bejne/narGlaKhbdl7kLc

Hahahaha. Ok. Yeah, obviously when I say "Cowboy Hat" I am totally spreading misinformation and shitting on the Mexican Vaqueros instead of making a nod to the universally understood stereotype to the "Cowboy hat". This video is just saying the "Cowboy Hat" we know as the cowboy hat is not what the "cowboys" of American history wore. The bowler is called the "real hat that one the west." This is not cherry picking. I hope you enjoyed the video anyway. I hope the rest of my videos aren't too full of my sly tactics to trick your super intelligent mind. Have a good day.
