In December 1993, Himeji Castle became the first castle in Japan to be registered as a World Heritage site.
Most of the world's "castles" inscribed as World Heritage sites are built of stone or brick, and Himeji Castle is regarded as a rare example of wooden construction.
In the past, many castles were built using black as their base color, but Himeji Castle is a shining white castle with even the joints of the roof tiles covered with white plaster.
It is said that its beauty marked the end of the Warring States Period and ushered in a new era.
Himeji Castle covers an area of about 23 hectares (=230,000 square meters) in Uchimaru alone. The Uchimaru alone covers an area of about 23 hectares (=230,000 square meters), an area equivalent to about five Tokyo Domes.
The area extends in a circle around Mt. Himeji, covering 233 hectares.
