I could listen to the theme tune on repeat all day. Best TV theme tune ever.

I used to think that the man was a bit scary but the music was good. Weekend world too.

Was a strange period to live through the violence from police in particular. Thatcher was unbending on this as she was the hunger strikers and poll tax. Ultimately it cost her.

The strike ended in March 1985 and most had even gone back to work already or went back in 1985. The pits went on for a few more years but most closed by the late 80s or early 90s. A few remained open, they were privatised of course, they stayed open as long as there was coal fired power plants but all of those are closed as well. The mining communities in the late 80s and into the 90s became deprived areas with high unemployment. It took years for them to recover, a lot of those communities were built around the coal mines, the populations.and communities grew only due to their being work in the coal mines. Once they were gone, the main source of employment was gone. Unemployment and drugs became an issue in these once proud communities. I don't think many of them ever recovered fully in an economic sense although some managed to create new jobs. I know because I briefly lived in one such placed called Thurcroft in South Yorkshire, my dad was a miner for a couple of years in the 70s. I saw what happened to the place in later years as my dad kept in touch with people there well into the 2000s.
