Love to hear what Breedlove thinks about this "project". Sadly, not surprised at the disastrous ending. Surplus jets are not good transonic LSR platforms. Success and reasonable safety requires purpose-built vehicles.

@ Johnny Wilde. you're correct with Bloodhound being build for the job as a land vehicle. I'll sound biased being a Bloodhound 1k Member but we hear things that makes me think the Eagle was a good idea when the LSR was maybe in the 600mphs. The low altitude speed record is 990mph which incidently was set by an F104. Even without rolling drag of wheels on the ground the shape itself will never get it to 1000mph or the low altitude airspeed record would be higher. Also add in the EJ200 jet in Bloodhound is the most advanced jet engine and that's working outside its envelope at 800mph. Thrust SSC had 2 engines for stability only not for power anyhow. The fastest a jet engine ever went at ground level is 990mph after that you need a rocket. They can add more jets, though they'll increase cross section and drag and maybe end up slower. Bottom line is, the Eagle is a novel idea but an F104 maxed out at ground level peaks about 990mph. 10 mph less than Bloodhound and Aussie Invader 5R hope to achieve. The Eagle is a dead duck because its designed on something that can't and never has done 1000mph at ground level even without rolling resistance of the ground.

Great car from the pacific northwest. My brother and I met Ed at Bonneville in 2010. We had a mutual friend driving for The Original Fast Guys. Ed took their car out for a run after they set a class record. It was great to talk with Ed in the pits and hear about the North American Eagle project. As with most ambitious projects there is a lot of work, time and money evolved in making this happen. Good luck to all envolved in this program.

Hi guys. For my penny, I want to make a couple of comments to transcend those most valuable remarks that have lately past before. I feel the Eagle team hasn't gone deep enough into the physics of reaching 1000+ mph. he buffeting of the frame does not seem to have been shown any consideration. Nor too has the suspension been given just regard to these forces. I don't know what wheel will be used to hold the car on the ground, but examining the layout, I woud suspect the wife of the driver out to see if he has taken out double indemnity life assurance. The drive of the Eagle will die before he gets a sniff of the old record, let alone the 1000 mph barrier. I would love to have Graig Breedlove to have examined this vehicle. I can only guess at what his private thoughts might be, but I'm sure there might be more negatives than positives. However, the spirit is there, and so too are the apparent guts to die younger than he might wish.. On the other-hand, I feel that Brits have been somewhat over-doing things. Yes, money is always needed, but now the Bloodhound project has become commecial, not in the spirit of private enterprise, that is, a couple of guys in a garage knocking something up while a long suffering wife brings tea or coffee to her boys. The Brits have always taken the WLSR off the Americans, and, I know it very much hurts their pride, that the Brits, in their tiny islaned, no bigger than Arkansas, who once ruled the 1/3 of the World, and commercially still does (America, look who owns you biggest companies and banks) can do the impossible, again and again. The sound barrier at sea level, the Brits, not at 40,000 feet like Chuck Yeager. Know wot I mean Arry?

As a Brit' it's exciting to see both The Bloodhound and North American Eagle projects developing. What is impressive is the thinking behind solving problems which success is already there with the educational value. Don't see it as a race at all personally but more about people pushing the barriers and those who are prepared to do so, thinking things through without being reckless. Very best wishes to all those involved and hope you reach your goals.

3:30 Narrator says "We get around 105 feet per gallon of gas..." That means 50 gallons per mile. I'm assuming he means when they are at full throttle and full afterburner. Does this sound accurate? I know the J79 Turbine Engine burns about 1.5 gallons per second at full afterburner.

Wow I just stumbled across this video. The sad thing is the fastest woman on wheels I'm having a hard time remembering her name and she was very popular. She drove this vehicle on the Black Rock Desert in Oregon. Unfortunately the eagle disintegrated killing her.

To set a new record is another story, to do that would require a tri engine setup, ( yes I said triple engine setup), as Ed mentioned to me it would be difficult to redesign the eagle due to cost issues, I think it's the only way to do it right !!!! ..

These were never cars. This young woman was in a F 104 Starfighter cobbled together by adding wheels to the back and taking off the wings. Cars are driven through the wheels and tires not with jet or rocket engines. Sad to see her get killed.

The fuselage being used is perfect for the Tri Engine setup if two more of these engines with the same cockpit setup can be found, again cost comes into prespective, but hey what do I know I'm only speaking my mind in this regard .. Good luck to your project ED !!!! ..

theres no way this will work even art arfons said if andy green said he just had enough power with two engines to get 763 how is somebody with half the power and more drag going to go faster
@liarliarliar64958 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it does have enough power. The max speed of flying jets is at high altitude where the air is thinner. I know the Thrust SSC is 200 mile an hour faster than a Euro fighter at low level, even though the plane has a much higher top speed at altitude.
@kimisdaman7 жыл бұрын
The F-104 could exceed Mach 1 with external stores at sea level.

The American tradition of land speed record breaking seems to consist of 'good ole boys' knocking stuff together quite creatively, but in a rather informal way. Whereas this approach may have been effective in the past, it simply is not up to the speeds and resultant complexities of modern record breaking. The British by contrast are the principal F1 country and build more of the worlds top racing cars than anyone else. This leads them to a scientific, hard engineering approach that is simply lacking in American efforts. There comes a point when you can't simply strap an ever larger supercharger onto your V8 (metaphorically speaking) and have instead to start hiring mathematicians and aerospace engineers.
@darkstar5d201110 жыл бұрын
The eagle is an impressive attempt at breaking the record but there is one flaw that could make it difficult more so then less, the thrust has a dual engine setup, the eagle only has one. this could limit it's capacity to match the thrusts final results, I feel a redesign incorporating a dual engine setup is in order to at least match the thrust's record breaking run..

@nintendogang48958 жыл бұрын
I have to add at the risk of starting an argument ... allegedly. As I understand it, the USAF claimed their radar data showed a speed in excess of Mach 1 for a brief time, but there is at least some doubt whether this is accurate. They might have broken the sound barrier, but Thrust SSC were the first team to meet the FIA rules. I have to ask, if the Budweiser rocket was that quick, why didn't they do a sanctioned run? That said, the Budweiser guys, and the NAE team deserve much respect for what they have achieved!

Here's another comment: anyone noticed the total lack of automotive safety equipment besides me? She certainly not wearing an automotive style crash helmet or Halo gear. I don't see any kind of roll protection in this vehicle, and she certainly wasn't wearing the kind of driving suit you'd wear in a land speed car. perhaps she'd still be dead and I have yet to find out what the cause of the crash was but perhaps the car just came apart.
