Remember that Elizabeth became Queen while the Korean War was still raging (which Britain was significantly involved in), so this was their country's farewell to possibly the last living leader or head of state of an ally from that critical era in their history. The flight from Brazil to London is actually 12 hours, the A319 has quite a range but probably stopped in Morrocco ! I've flown B777 to Brazil ( Rio ) several times, always passed over Casablanca en route

Gatwick Airport. Stansted only got around 60% of the visitors. The rest were at other London airports. Greek, German, French, Slovak, Czech, Dutch , Portuguese , Turk, Swedish etc .
