Melanie, I don't know about your experience was growing up, but I can clearly remember riding with my Dad on his horses, laying in my basket under the Trees, crawling around under the horses in the barn. ALL things that happened before my Dad died when I was two. I remember seeing my Mother crying as the people came to tell her Dad was dead. Plus I remember saving my little sister from drowning and I was only 3, I remember a lot more, maybe I'm unique. But I'm just saying some people do remember their baby and toddler year's! So I do believe Margaret remembers the drama and trauma of her youth during the War. Just as I remember my baby and toddler year's. All stuff my Mom or family didn't talk about, because it was too painful. Perhaps it's the Terror, Sadness and Tragedy that ignites the brain and everything is in technicolor the rest of their lives. I know I remember other trauma that I experienced that put me into the hospital before I was 18 months old. I remember the entire thing from the accident to the surgery. I know I'm not alone in this I have several patients who also have vividly clear memories of their baby years. No always based in trauma, but more often than not. I think in protecting itself the brain kicks in and makes you WAKE UP IT'S TIME TO SURVIVE OR DIE! Some people don't physically die but if the traumatic events are too much the brain will check out, the person will snap, go catatonic, psychotic and a variety of ways of checking out. People like myself and Margaret Atwood are survivors and remember so we can live to tell the truth in fictional stories based in truth. Or to heal people who've survived trauma from illnesses that plague them. You really can't judge Ms. Atwood because you have Not lived her life.

There are millions of people who can remember back to a very young age, without anyone ever talking about it. Ask anyone who remembers being sexually abused as a toddler. Some remember it clearly and never forget the pain, the colour of the sheets ,smells, etc. While others eventually remember as adults without anyone talking about it. Many of my male ,female, transgender patients remember great details they've kept hidden about subtle things that happened as young children. Again information that no one ever talked about or even knew about. My memory at 2 of my Mother standing in the dinning room window pregnant and crying as a good family friend was coming up the front stairs, isn't something that anyone ever talked about it was my experience. I just remember because it was a devastating day because it was they found my father's plane after it had crashed and Mr. Gustafson was coming to tell us. So I'm sorry but you are wrong and shouldn't go around pretending you are experienced in this topic. Perhaps you are afraid, because you don't remember, but there is something you should be remembering? Peace be with you!
