This battle has very similar moments to what are my most memorable moments when I used to play WOT. it was basically all of this but in a KV2. (The surprise from behind panic moment for the enemy heavy and the face of terror as a cromwell stops dead right in front of you, just knowing it’s all over.) At 6:13 I think that was the flip-side of the Ghost Shells that I often see unicoms ranting about. For every time that WoT displays a shell that seems to pass right through an enemy without doing any damage, they will also see (but not complain about) an apparent miss that actually hits and does damage. These "Ghost Hits" usually pass just behind a tank that is moving out of the line of flight of the shell.

So let me get this straight... Artillery does obscene amounts of damage, 1-shots even; Artillery gets rebalanced repeatedly until it struggles to kill even light vehicles. Centurion Tank Destroyer here, KV-2 and O-I some ranks down, does obscene amounts of damage; they get minimal rebalancing. Both are known for tossing HE at most of their targets. So why the disparity?

Now, naturally, everyone who hates this tank, hates its high alpha and capacity for one-shots, or its complete lack of other redeeming features. But most complain about the alpha and the fact that it's mostly done through an HE variant. This means that Wargaming *HAS* to nerf the tank in some obtuse way the community never intended. God forbid they listen to the players playing the game. They could very easily have nerfed the HESH damage to something reasonable and left the high alpha to the AP rounds, requiring some accuracy to use. Instead, Wargaming are going for the "unplayable" approach, making the thing so frustrating to use it's creeping back closer to its original earned moniker.

Considering the 215 183 is a "legacy" vehicle, which is a point of contention I also have with Wargaming, it's a bit more rare than the Shitbarn. I believe that nerfing the shitbarn's HESH without touching the 215 would not be so detrimental. Certainly not to the extent that the current nerf is proposing. Of course, we're all crybabies in this game, so sure as shit someone will go nuts over it, no matter what happens.

What makes the Shitbarn so much more competitive than the Deathstar is the place where the turret is mounted, and its lack of armour, funnily enough. The Shitbarn has a turret in the middle of the tank, and it can move around 90 degrees to either side. It's not super slow at turning the hull, so it's fairly mobile. For the Deathstar, its armour is enough for someone to argue that it's very effective, yet the armour is worth less than a rat's arse in in the 14th century. The armour is good enough against smaller guns hitting the heavily angled parts, but anything with good pen (260+) will go right through the turret. And the way the turret is mounted, more than half your tank will be visible before you can hit anything. "Just sidescrape", you say? Try and sidescrape with a big box of bad armour at your turret, angled to perfection FOR the enemy. It's easy to hit, pens all the time, and you can't hide it. THAT is what makes the Deathstar bad, and the Shitbarn good. They should honestly switch names at this point.

As for the death star vs doom barn, death star doesn't have amazing armor by today's metric, but that certainly was the difference before. Death star could just sit in the open and laugh, while doom barn evaporates as soon as it's spotted.

They might be complaining about the gun but from a gameplay perspective that would be the last thing they want to nerf. You don't drop a weapons advantage to make it fair, you exaggerate its weakness. You wouldn't make the clip of a LMG smaller in a FPS game, you make the reload longer or the aim worse. If a tank has a powerful gun and frontal armour, you slow its turret traverse and movement making it easier to flank.

Here's my opinion on this thing's gun. It doesn't need to get nerfed as in less damage and penetration, its stats need to be tuned back down. My reasoning for this is that when this thing first came out, if you wanted this insane British 183mm gun, it was EITHER the FV215b 183 OR the FV4005 II. And of course, back then, the 4005 was such shit that the correct choice was clearly the 215b 183. In an attempt to make the 4005 more popular, they overtuned it - it wouldn't have the armor of the 215b 183, but it would be much more flexible: better gun handling, better gun depression, quicker tank, etc. But now that the 215b 183 has been replaced in the tech tree by the Badger, the only way for someone to get a tank with this gun who didn't get the 215b 183 is the 4005. Now that it doesn't have a competitor (I'd say the 215b 183 doesn't count as a competitor since nobody can get one now), it needs to get tuned back down: nerf the gun handling, maybe make the turret traversal angles 45 on each side and not 90, and slow it down. Once that happens, I'd argue that the gun itself with its HESH ammo isn't overpowered for several reasons, especially compared to what I would say is a comparable gun in today's meta: the Type 5's derp with premium HE. First, it doesn't have the armor of a Type 5 or even of the 215b 183. Not only is it thinner than most light tank's armor at 14mm, but it's huge and flat and just awful. It doesn't have a chance of trading shots like a Type 5 can. In addition, because of this, the 4005 isn't brawling point-blank with enemy tanks. The Type 5's bad accuracy and aimtime don't matter because it's fighting with people face-to-face. The 4005 can't do that so its bad accuracy and aimtime actually matter. Second, a case could be made that with the current gun handling of the 4005, its standard AP shells are more op than its HESH. 310mm pen and 1150 damage on a standard round, with the aimtime, accuracy, and reload of the current 4005, gives it a much higher chance to deal consistently high damage and penetrating hits than if it was firing HESH. I feel like KZbin is full of replays like this where the guy penetrates a bunch of his HESH shells and gets insane damage totals when that isn't the norm for these tanks. Don't forget, this guy was top tier in a -2 tier spread, something that happens less often now with the new matchmaking. Lower tiers typically means less armor (like killing the Progetto 46). He's more likely to face tanks with thicker armor that he can't pen with the HESH (Also don't forget that the HESH only has 230mm of pen). That sounds really high because of its damage potential, but it really won't be very effective as far as actually penetrating armor is concerned when you're in an all-tier 10 match shooting at heavies and assault TDs like the 268 v4, so you're highly unlikely to consistently land those 1.3k dmg+ penetrating shots. Lastly, don't forget, the tank still only carries 20 shells. Its combat capacity is limited. I'm not trying to downplay this guy's amazing replay, but let's be honest, he was very lucky and this was a one-in-a-million battle, this is not the norm for the 4005. TLDR: The 4005 was overtuned and now that the Badger has replaced the 215b 183, it needs to be nerfed in gun handling and flexibility (which it is), but the gun itself does not need to be nerfed because it's inconsistent and although it can deal high damage without actually penetrating the armor, it does not have the ability of a Type 5 or even FV215b 183 to trade shots due to its huge profile and horrifically thin armor.

As for the shitbarn nerfs, I think Wargaming are trying their hand at the "Icefrog nerf" method. For those who don't know, Icefrog is the lead developer of Dota 2 and when some character in the game is too strong, what he does is generally keep the thing that's powerful about the hero intact and instead nerfing the "soft" aspects of the character (less mana, lower stat gains, lower mobility, etc.) so that the character is still great at the things they're known for but just less efficient overall, mostly weaker and easier to handle at all points of the game, but still dangerous in their niche. Of course, Wargaming being Wargaming, they're doing it completely wrong and missing the point, so there's that.

Less mobility means that the barn has less opportunity to get into position and line up a shot. That said, it is odd to nerf it when there are far more “effective” ways to deal with supposed complaints.

A big reason the shitbarn isn't as detested as the deathstar is the lack of armor. I'm suprised the enemy didn't pop out on the heavy corner and put some HE into his turret. The deathstar was dangerous because you had to corner and aim your shot all while the deathstar was aiming with the same big gun.

Well the thing with the Deathstar is that it was actually fairly well armoured so you were by no means guaranteed to actually pen it when you hit it, especially when you were playing T8 heavies. This meant that first you got hit by firepower large enough to obliterate alderaan and while the Deathstar was pulling back you maybe got the chance to shoot it back with a high likelyhood of bouncing (at least for me but i am a noob) Then you tried to go for another shot, which might bounce as well and by the time your third shot would even be halfway loaded, you would get completely pounded into the ground. With the FV4005 you can at least load the HE and be 100% guaranteed to score damage and most of the time even critical damage which reduces the reload

I think the S.Barn gets by with few complaints because every tank it can HESH can HE it back just as easily. So long as you're not stupidly driving and letting shoot you it's certainly easier than dealing with the FV 215B 183.
