1:13 in the video is an IS-2 with a stepped slope. As others point out, the later production variants also had the fully sloped front. I don't say that infantry riding on the tank is a bad idea. I say that infantry riding on the tank when the TC is no longer able to communicate directly with the infantry because he's inside the turret is a bad idea, as it implies there is lots of hot metal flying around.

1) There are plenty of reasons for a fender to be 'sprung' to stay in place. What is unusual about IS-4 is that the spring system is more in-depth than the typical single bar. 2) No change. If the area is not so hot that the infantry are not at inordinate risk by staying in the tank, the TC can probably keep his hatch open and his head out.

Soviet tank forces went through incredibly painful learning process in WWII. One of the lessons learned was that tanks needed infantry, artillery, and air support in combat. In the time before IFV's, infantry simply rode into combat on top of the tanks and then filed in behind tanks. Its an easy solution that helped them develop new combined arms doctrine.

actually, they didn't have enough trucks to transport their assault troops, so they came up with the brilliant idea of putting 10-15 guys on each tank (3-5 in a platoon) so that each tank platoon/company would hold a reasonable assault force. They would literally, drive about 100 yds from a german position and the infantry would jump off and assault it. Not terribly efficient, and usually having high losses, but it worked.

How about cost to manufacture? Or, ease of maintaining the vehicle? Also, there is the time needed to research and develop the technology needed to make such a behemoth. Then there is the practical side of utilizing the tank in combat. The Tiger II (King Tiger) was a one of the largest tanks to see combat and it was forever getting stuck in mud, because of how heavy it weighed. It's nice to say that a country could just make as big a tank as possible, but it would hardly work IRL.
