@@frederickvondinkerberg7721 A re-sectioned colon is a bit more than "minor" I'd think. A bit more than pulling a tooth. Don't know if they removed any lymph nodes along the way, but some medical sites would disagree: "Colon resection (colectomy) is the surgical removal of part or the entire colon. Colectomy is a major surgery...." The keyhole part does speed healing by reducing the damage to the abdominal wall. Also leaves you with some amusing scars to show off at the sea side. Layperson here, so if you have better info, please go on.. What would you consider major surgery?

Novorossiysk Novorossiysk, Sevastopol, 1950 The Italian battleship Giulio Cesare was turned over to the Soviet Union by Italy in 1948 as war reparations. Renamed Novorossiysk, she was assigned to the Black Sea Fleet. Sunk with 608 deaths following explosion in 1955; probably due to striking a leftover German mine.

More likely is there was a Soviet sailor smoking in one of the magazines. Health and Safety is not a phrase that has ever appeared in the Soviet lexicon. They just lie/cover up the real reason. The Soviet Navy once lost 16 Admirals and a further 12 senior officers in a plane crash (a Tu 104A) 10 seconds after take-off in 1981, including the Commander of the Pacific Fleet. Why? The Admirals overloaded the plane with personal belongings, overruled the crews concerns and ruined the planes ability to fly (IIRC, the planes centre of gravity was all to the rear).

All 5 'R' class Battleships were in fact updated in the 1930's, they just did not receive the major updates that the QE class got. The major change was augmentations to their anti-aircraft batteries, the addition of Radar and new rangefinders and extra searchlights.

plus the fact that the sovetsky soyuz, the pride and joy of the soviet "what if" fanboys, was a mix between a American and a Italian projects submitted to the soviet union in good old soviet fashion they went «we don't like it so we won't buy it, but we will keep the project blueprints» from there they created the soyuz at least that's how the story goes

Fun fact: The Chum Phon actually pronounced along the line of "Choom-porn" with the name "Chum Phon" is the name of one of our southern province and the word "phon" mostly mean "wish" in english. Not an 'um actually' but from everything I've read / watched on the Novorossysk, the Soviets did refit the ship and take good care of her as the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet until her sinking (almost certainly) due to an old WW2 era German mine.
