World of Warships - Texas Review - How Much AA?!?!?!

This video review of the Texas, the tier 5 premium US battleship. This video looks at the strengths and weaknesses of this battleship. I will go over the ships stats, recommended modules, captains skills and also some gameplay footage. The Texas is a New York with a few improvements and absolutely GOD TIER AA at tier 5. She can brawl more efficiently compared to the New York due to superior gun arcs, but her biggest strength is her AA, which eats planes all day long. Another point of buying the Texas is that WG says some of the funds will go towards the Texas's up keep as she is need of dock work and they want to make a new park for her. Google USS Texas for more information and maybe you will want to send a few spare dollars to the Texas on your own.

This may just be the best premium ship for USN captains...thanks for the review and indepth coverage to show what really changed. Not just a NY with AA. Haha, they should have made the Texas list to one side when you pick up the longer range module upgrade, as that's what she did on D-Day. Would be an interesting mechanic...longer range, need to be broadside, but exposing more hull to citadels...or maybe make that part of the ship as a stock configuration. If they can make ships roll over when sinking, I think they can make this part of the game. Actually...maybe something like a longer range cooldown like the spotter plane, instead it lists the ship, slows you down, but gives you 10% extra range and lasts for 2 minutes a perk with 2 minute cooldown (need to bilge the water; animate that afterwards?)...unlimited uses, but makes you vulnerable, of course...Now, that would be interesting and unique.

I've been waiting for the Texas herself to make it in game. And SOOOO glad they chose to put her in with her Measure 31a Design 8b camo scheme that she wore in late 1944. I was dreading that if they did add her that it would be the measure 21 that she wore in the pacific and now as she sits.

You know, back in alpha I illustrated to the development the artificially limited gun arcs on the New York and how they should be corrected. Never did get any attention and still hasn't been corrected. Then comes the premium Texas and not only is that issue resolved (but still not for New York) it gets the final refit they both got and is still the same tier >.> . One of my biggest dissapointments in WoWS is how the premiums often are flat out better unlike WoT.

I am from Fort Worth, Texas. As a child we took many field trips to see this ship. I remember fondly playing on her AA guns, and going in one of the main gun Turrets just to see what they looked like. Good it would be so very hot in those turrets. I have a question. I have been mostly playing Japanese Cruisers and I just have only 10-15 battles with Japanese Battleships. I understand that JPN BB have a huge citadel but I really wanted to get the Yamato. Since the Texas came out, I was wondering if it is worth buying it because I really want to try Battleship than mainly playing Cruisers. I have done poorly with JPN BB so far but I am great with Cruisers. What do you guys think?

+MaitreMetroid , I was a US cruiser player before I took a break. This brought me back, and I'm enjoying it much. Trying to grind BB's before was brutal (for me), ad the CV's just ate me up. That doesn't seem to be the case with Texas, and I'm actually getting good practice with the guns, less molested.

+iChaseGaming There is a mistake here, this must be the EU server version because the NA version of the NY has 16 127mm/51 MK 7 secondary guns, not the 6 that you listed here. It's one of the reasons I don't want the Texas, for better AA you lose almost your entire ability to fend of an attacking Destroyer. It also means the NY cannot outfight a Kongo at close range. The Kongo has less AA but a lot more secondaries (20 regular and 18 when upgraded) and it's guns are longer ranged. The Texas is a mid to long range fighter, it is NOT a brawler and will have trouble with enemy ships that get close.

That's most likely the "A" hull or "stock" version of the NY you're looking at - IE, it's "as built" or WWI configuration - the "B" hull is it's late 1930's refit version, where they removed all but six of the 127mm/51's - same as Texas - and added an extensive array of AA guns as well. On the B hull New York, with BFT AFT and the AA upgrade module, it can attain an AA rating of 45 itself.

Nice video and ship review :) only criticism I have I've mentioned before. On the premium ships I think you shouldn't focus on the captain skills. Part of the Perk of a premium ship(as in WoT) is it is for crew training. I wouldn't be having a dedicated captain for my premium ships.

You say to upgrade the AA range, but don't you think during Tier 7 battles, which the Texas can see, the 15.6km range is a bit low? Wouldn't it be more beneficial to have the upgraded main battery range to deal with higher tiered ships?

+thechicagobearsftw If you have concealment expert on the captain, then the range is fine. I played in mostly tier 7 battles and she performed just fine with 15.6km range. If however, you don't have the skill you can consider the range module, although personally I'd still buff the AA to stupid levels and just use islands as cover to move closer

+iChaseGaming It's fine if the battle comes to you. But you're only 20.5 kts though... I absolutely hated my Colorado with the short range build I used first. Also, if you can ditch the concealment expert skill, you can get the other from superintendent/torpedo + the 2 remaining of Situational Awareness, BFT and Basics of Survivability. I'd say that at 13+ km, you can usually dodge a lot of incoming fire anyway.

If you mount Artillery Plotting Room instead of AA mod you get a significant increase in firing range, consequently you don't need to spend 5 XP points on cammo skill AND you have more options in higher tier games. For a slow battleship range is more important than AA and you get much more credits from doing more damage to ships than from shooting down airplanes.

Personally I would do this too. Only draw back is with the extra range the dispersion goes up significantly as well. But I do hate the idea of wasting captains skills for any premium ship. One of the perks of a premium ship is crew training for your existing captians.

Is it just me, or have WG been giving us worse premiums than they use to? What I mean by worse is that the new premiums are very similar to the in-game ships. eg: Lo Yang - Benson, etc.I don't actually have a problem with this as it puts wallet warriors on the same level as everyone else rather than being ahead, but wondering if anyone else has been seeing the same thing. That being said, I'm always happy to see more ships in the game! :D

eh. i'd still take the main battery range modification over the AA range. yeah, having a tier 5 BB with good AA is nice (and it still will be without the mod), but when you get into those higher tier matches, the last place you want to be is within 15km of a Nagato or Colorado. the same could be said for getting too close to a New Mexico or Fuso. the extra main gun range also helps to make up for the slow speed, and it's useful in every match. buffing the AA doesn't help in those matches without any CVs.

My favourite USN BB is the NEW MEXICO so far. I love that thing it just feels right now that I've correct my gunnery the IJN BBs are doing well for me too but something about the NM is just so gratify. Is there any BBs after the NM where you get the same feeling as PENSACOLA to NEW ORLEANS. I actually loved playing my PENSACOLA so I was sad to sell it but I heard the NO was a better ship and I want the DES MOINES eventually. I was not disappointed with the NO triple guns better armour and playing it like I did my PEPSI-COLA Can was so rewarding it was simply just and improvement I loved it. I found the biggest thing was understanding when to use HE and AP with my cruiser, the PC and the NO are cruiser killers. Sorry I know I want on a tangent, I want to keep my NM but selling it will make transition to Colorado easier and faster I'm just wondering is there a point where the BB line has that flat improvement again? I heard Colorado is rough as well as the Tier X BB.

Well, I have to hand it to WG on this one. They've managed to create a slow USN BB that won't get left behind by the rest of the team - they'll all be clustered around you, so you can give THEM AA cover, LOL. I already know the feeling - I've had Kirovs clinging to the coattails of my AA-build Colorado in Tier 7 games, for just that reason. I have a feeling that WG will nerf that AA before release - two or more of these BB's on one team would just literally shut down even two carriers in a mid-tier battle, if left as is. Flamu has a video up, where he did a training room test, pitting an AA-build Texas against 5 Zuiho bots - he survived for nearly 4 minutes, under simultaneous air attack by 5 carriers - took only 2 torp hits, died to multiple fires and unable to heal - and shot down 38 planes in those 4 minutes before he sank. Bloody right this thing has god tier AA.

Well the reason I would say escort the CVs early on is1: because they're almost 100% going to get in the start of the match and 2: most BBs are going to be too fast. even the Warspite makes 23knots so you would be slow do the faster BBs for better AA instead of letting a CA that can keep up and kill the DDs. Escorting in BBs isn't ideal. you can only do damage when they don't shoot you in higher tier match and they'll always out range you. so early on that's why I choose that. this is of coarse of only for t7 matchs.

+John Weikel the Texas should not be escorting a carrier, that is a cruisers job. The Texas won't be able to catch up with the fleet, making itself useless. No damage = useless.

yes but it is very slow. if you go the wrong flank and then you need to turn back because the other fell you won't get back. and if any dds are stalking your fleet and you get left behind just good luck. I would play it like a T95. Very carefully. Hang back until the push will work because if it fails you're screwed. Also this is only for a t7 match where every other ship is going to out range you. Have fun burning and getting your AA knocked out when that's all that makes you different in a t7 match.

So the Texas is a NY with smexy AA, less maneuverability (which was pretty iffy to begin with) and better armour angling for utilising the full broadside. The NY is a rather good BB to my mind, and is actually my best ship besides the New Mex (60%...so nice...), but does that make the Texas worth it to sail a superior NY? Honestly, I can't see it. The Warspite and the Tirpitz bring more value for money for a BB player.

+Cailus Griffin Accept now U.S. BB players have an alternative ship to help train Captain skills. I loved playing the New York enough that I didn't sell it. Seeing as how I've been on board the U.S.S. Texas in Houston I will be getting this ship and likely selling the New York.

That's true enough, I suppose. It doesn't look likely that we'll be getting another US BB anytime soon, with the German BBs and Royal Navy around the corner. If you can afford it the Texas is a fine ship for US BB enthusiasts, although I still maintain that the Warspite and Tirpitz are better Premium battleships for value. :)

+The Hungry Wolf 足柄 Nope, because the New York's AA is already pretty impressive, and unless you're absolutely terrible at Battleshipping, the gun rotations basically just make it easier to get more guns to bear, but 8 will still shred most targets that you're going to win against. The only part where that easier to get 5th turret is going to change things is in a situation where a bit more angle would be the difference between citadels or not.

If you can just delete entire fighter squads in seconds that rudder shift loss is not even that huge of a deal. A speed difference of 0.5 knots is barely noticable as the ship was already slow. The turret angles and AA is however very noticable and gives the ship far more survivability against carriers, cruisers and battleships. Only against certain destroyers you might be at a slight disadvantage, which you can make up for at least partially with better turret angles.

The problem is no one has a 19 pt skipper to stick into a T5 BB 8-(. I like stealth builds on my BB's but anything over 15 points goes to survivability on mine.

I Chase :: one problem,, U kept mentioning that this ship needs a row 5 Captain. well the only row 5 USN captain I have is in my North Carolina. My Benson Captain isn't suited for BB play. so why should I spend 500 doubloons to transfer my NC Captain & instantly retrain him. if I did that every time I wanted to play this ship or my NC it would get expensive. so starting from scratch I think I might make it up to a row 3 or 4 captain.

+james waldrup You don't have to retrain any captain to use in a premium so long as it is from the same nation. Any USN captain will work in this from any type of ship with no retraining and no loss of skill.

+james waldrup No retraining. I use my premiums every day bud :) Just go to the menu for captain, select "from other ships" and pick the one you want to use. You can tell it is compatible because the skills you have will be white and not orange. When you're done with playing the Texas, just go back to the NC and repeat the same thing. The only requirement is that it is from the same nation. Also, if you have re-trained a captain for a new ship (say you went from NC to Iowa) and you do not want to pay the gold, you can grind out the XP on the premium ship. All of the skills work fully on the premium regardless of the XP penalty. Note: you have to have at least one space in your captain reserve to move them from ship to ship. I simply dismiss my premium captains when I first buy it since I will always use it to train my current captains anyways.

+james waldrup Well the Murmansk captain is trained for that ship, you would have to retrain him to the Kirov. But the Kirov captain will work with no retraining in the Murmansk, if that makes sense. Basically a premium ship can use any other ship of that countries captain with no penalty but the captain that came with the premium does not have special attributes that allow him to go in another ship without the same retraining, hes just a generic captain. Good luck with it.

Usually premiums have super-awful AA for their tier, with the Arkansas Beta being the King of weak AA. Ironic the other premium USN BB is very AA oriented. I am still waiting for the silly Saipan to go away and the Campbeltown to go on sale, so by the time the TX goes on sale I'll have probably forgotten all about it.

i really hope the actual Texas/ the museum she has become gets a chunk of the profits from sale of this thing, it's only fair. Also i would strongly recommend you go with the extra range mod, when i first got my NY i immediately tried to fix the turret traverse and i hated playing the thing, once i changed it out for the range mod, i started kicking teeth in with the 18.1 km range (BTW dispersion at the range is not really that bad i find). and even though i have the Colorado and am on the verge of getting the NC, i still play my NY for the lolz,

+Draftsman17 I think the Range Module is also viable, however if u have concealment expert on the Captain, you can ditch the module and use stealth to get closer. Plus without the AA range module, her AA range isn't very good and the only really amazing part of the Texas is that AA and making it longer range will keep planes away, either way works though so experiment!

Going to get it as I have no premium BB for tier 5. I liked the NY back in CBT. Too bad they nerfed it's 12sec ruddershift it had at the begining... Then it would really have been like ot's CBT counterpart. What I would really want tho would be a BB with "Godly" secondaries. Mikasa has them but range of them is 3km so uber-crappy in PvP (And lots of complaints last year when it was sold in EU). So a BB with many secondaries that would reach to say, 8km (buffed, but without flags) from tier 3 to 5 (any of these tiers would be fine). HMS Dreadnought or French Jean Bart (1911) for T3 would do well !

+Ray Giordano I know about the Warspite... but it does not meet my criterias... 8km buffed but without flags, and between tier 3 and 5. But it's one of the better ships I agree. Too bad it was nerfed 3 times since OBT (Armor nerf, accuracy nerf, fire resistance nerf). It's still good, but no longer good nenough to push ahead to brawl like she was made for in this game. A real shame.

In the most recent iteration of the Texas, I've noticed her batteries have a poorer range than the New York. I'd argue it's a different ship now, not a p2w situation. I have to say though, the CVs don't even target me and I still melt those planes. Texas is an enjoyable buy if you know how to play a New York, but the range is worse.
