Hey Steve - I hope that you have a wonderful time when you visit. I think it should start to quieten down a little once the kids go back to school. September is a great time to visit, we used to come up for the same week before we eventually moved here.

I think it is one of those things that I realised last year, during lockdown, when I spent time working on my black and white photography. Sort of encouraged me to focus on looking for contrast.
@tonyhayes98273 жыл бұрын
Love the reason you photograph locally. Less frenzy, more contemplation, better insights like looking for natural contrast and not being imprisoned by the more superficial. And so, better photography.

Thanks Tony - that is a great way of looking at things. I will start to work my way back into the Lake District more in the coming months, and I am scheduled to finish my current project at the end of the year, which has been based on my local area.

An excellent image for world photography day - I think you nailed it. You are also so right about finding natural contrast in order to create interest in an picture - even if you think at the time that it could do with light it is an interesting exercise in order to have a planned composition. No time in the landscape is wasted, and next time when there is that warm light or whatever then you are ready to pounce - not literally of course :) Keep safe sir, and do avoid the tourists - schools back as of next Wednesday - cannot wait for a bit of quiet around the roads of North Dorset :)
@ChrisSalePhoto3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Huw - I agree, every time you visit a location you learn something that you can use the next time. Much of my best work is culmination of many visits. Eventually you are rewarded for your persistence.

Chris, lovely composition. I think that the fog or low clouds helped give more contrast to the heather. Thank you for sharing.
@ChrisSalePhoto3 жыл бұрын
You might be right Craig. I think the purple of the heather contrasts nicely against the green of the grasses. I also find that overcast conditions like this help bring out colour like this - you need strong midtones.

HI Hugh - I can imagine that conditions here and conditions in Arizona are quite different! I should think it is rare to get enough moisture to create mist. Moisture is not a problem for us here! :)

@@ChrisSalePhoto Thanks Chris, yes the rapidly spreading Delta finally arrived via Australia, unfortunately one of the problems with being tiny and doing so well is we have been well down the queue for vaccines so we’ve had to slam ourselves back into our strictest lockdown. Fortunately I’ve got about two months videos for my channel squirrelled away as we can only leave home for food shopping, very local exercise or medical reasons.

I can understand you staying out of the Lakes Chris. I camped in 2nd half of June and thought it was heaving and then realised that it would be a lot worse come summer holidays. Hope it's quietened down by Oct when I'm coming back. In summer I do tend to be picky on the forecasts that I get myself out of bed for at 2-3am I admit!

You make some good points here Chris! We can sometimes get so focused on "the light" that we pass up good opportunities to capture some images. Composition, light and subject matter, often go hand-in-hand - so it's important to work with all three elements to grab a shot.
@ChrisSalePhoto3 жыл бұрын
For me Alan, subject and composition come first. It is then a case of returning time and time again until you get the light that supports the narrative that you want to portray - at least that is my approach.

Interesting that you said that you don't travel well. There are so many places in your part of the globe that I want to visit again; Scotland, Lofoten, Iceland & Europe etc. I'm in Australia and it takes at least 30 hrs flying time to get to anywhere in your region. Willing to do it but Covid-19 has curtailed that for now. Sydney is currently in week 8 of a 12 week home lockdown, only able to go to the shops for essential groceries within 5k X once per day. No photography allowed.
