In this video we estimate the early world population from 10000 BC to 2021 relative to present day countries boundaries. Data is based on historical censuses and archaeological findings projection.

10,000 BCE to 1799: HYDE Version 3.2 The very ambitious HYDE database (History database of the Global Environment) is maintained by researchers at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.
1800 to 1949: Gapminder Version 6. Gapminder maintains a population dataset based on data from Angus Maddison and CLIO INFRA, that we use as our source for the period from 1800 to 1949. Their documentation provides the following details on their sources.
1950 to 2021: UN World Population Prospects. We rely on the latest issue of the United Nations World Population Prospects as our main source for recent historical data and future projections. We use this data for its reliability, its consistent methods, and because it includes population estimates for almost all territories in the world. The UN updates its dataset every 2 years.

The population in ancient China was much higher than that shown in the video, because there was a serious under-reporting of population in ancient China. This phenomenon was not alleviated until 1750 when the Qing government issued the policy of allocating the population to mu. You can see in the video that the population of China suddenly tripled around 1750, and that's because the under-reported population was counted

Tbh these are really population reconstructions, before 1900 there is no way to 100% get accurate measurements so proxies and other methods are used so there is uncertainty. But nonetheless this is interesting to watch still.

What is interesting to think about also, is, how much people could maximally live somewhere? And, to say so: for North america it is 2.2 Billion, South america 2.9 Billion, Europe 1.6 Billion, Africa ~6.5 Billion, Asia 9.4 Billion and for Oceania (Australia) (including Indonesia) it is 1.3 Billion people, so in total: 23.9 Billion. Of course, life standards would have to be norminized, no "luxus"-products and no "useless" products where "good" ones could grow.

I think a much more useful map would be to use more or less equal area regions or failing that, the provinces/states/oblasts within the large countries. Brazil most likely because of the many rivers it has and its fertile land. I imagine it's somewhat similar to India in that aspect. Someone mentioned that India and China had a population boom after the domestication of Rice in China. Brazil didn't domesticate anything like that. I don't know if they got corn and if they did I don't know if that grows as well in their environment as something like Rice did in Asia. As for Mexico, I think it had to do with the fact they were experts at domesticating plants. Mexico doesn't have the rivers other countries have, and rivers are essential for the growth of plants and population. However they did domesticate corn, Chile, vanilla, tomatoes, gum, rubber, pumpkin, cotton, tobacco, cactus, magay(whatever the plant is called for making Tequila), maybe chocolate from Mexico alone. One a staple (corn) and the others also extremely important and relevant to humans. What they lacked in resources they made up with ingenuity and adaptation. One such example is the city of Tenochtitlan. The Mexica city. It was built on an island on a lake of salt water. Terrible conditions for growth. It would have been a death sentence for many other people, however the Mexica built damns to filtrate the salt water from the fresh water. That way they could us the water for farming and drinking water, also fishing. They built aquaducts that went from mountains to the city so people could have easy access to fresh clean water. When they ran out of space to farm they built Chinampas (floating gardens) in the lake. Boom, the perfect way to farm invented. Perfect example of creativity and adaptation. Much reverence is given to say the Germans for achievements during ww1-ww2 eras in terms of being efficient and smart but the people of Mexico had done it from before 10,000 BC to 1519 AD. Having first place to retaining 3rd for thousands of years, not bad.

This is really interesting and I see that the data is based on reputable sources. But no way are the sources correct. No way the areas that became Mexico, Brazil, and the US had populations bigger than China and India. No way that Mexico’s or Brazil’s populations were three times bigger than Egypt’s at the height of Ancient Egyptian civilization. China’s population is seriously underestimated in much of the video up until the 18th century. Lots of other issues. I’m not criticizing the video. I love this stuff and love the effort that went into it. And you’re using reputable sources. But the numbers and ratios presented sometimes aren’t making sense.

When you domesticate farm animals, rarely, diseases jump from animals to humans, a plague breaks out, and once the plague wave is over, the affected surviving populations build immunity to it. Since there wasn't that much immunity from Native Americans, that means there weren't any plagues there, meaning they didn't have farm animals, and since farm animals give lots of food resources, the absence of them means less food, meaning less population, meaning less cities, meaning less civilization, meaning less advancements. Also, we can't forget how barbaric the Aztecs, the most prominent Native American civilization, was. They'd cut out peoples' hearts while they were alive, then they'd eat the heart, and then they'd skin them and wear the skin. I'm not sure how that makes them advanced.

It's amazing to see Mexico being in first place and then maintaining 3rd up to the extermination of the American natives. Even more amazing when you consider that there is no large river in Mexico like there is in China, India, Brazil, etc. Also note worthy, back then population basically equated wealth so Mexico was also one of the richest places on Earth/productive. I was always amazed that in the little area that is Mesoamérica (central and south of Mexico) was able to compete with the old world by themselves in terms of technology and ideas up to their fall by the Europeans. Before someone brings it up, yeah they lacked metal weapons, domesticated animals, and gun powder. This can be explained by geography alone. The old world in shape is more round while the new world is a straight continent. This limits the areas of contact one can have. So take Greece for example: it was surrounded by multiple civilizations that were diverse. So information and goods traveled faster. As opposed to Mesoamérica that basically only had contact with itself. Also with other groups from south of the USA but was rare. Also the new world lacked animals that could be domesticated. Which means no horses to ride and thus took longer for info and goods to get transported. Gun powder was a genius freak accidntal invention by the Chinese. Metal, the natives had metal and even some metal weapons they just didn't practice war like the people of the old war so military innovation wasn't really required so they fell behind there. Minor point, clothing...mexico had cotton (good kind that is used today) for cloths. I think they're style of clothing was actually better, at very least for their weather. Silk is hard to beat though and that's also Chinese if were keeping track. Point here being that Mexico alone was matching some of the best in all of the old world. Native horses did exist in the Americas, they just went extinct. They were later repopulated by the Europeans with European horses.

@@codyhuffman2265 Yeah horses went extinct in the Americas but cross the Bering Strait into the old world before that. They weren't repopulated by Europeans. They thrived in the grass lands of the steppe of Euroasia which is Mongolia, Turkey, Russia, etc. They were also first domesticated there.
