Filmed in Austin, Manitoba, Canada by my good friend, Peter Philipsen (LanceOwcepoof). Certified Guinness world record as the largest operational agricultural plow. This demonstration pitted five examples of the century old Rumely 30-60 Model E oil pull traction engines against 66 Cockshutt 14 inch plow bottoms cutting a furrow 77 feet wide. Former Cockshutt CEO, Bill Cockshutt was present to plant the first plow bottom in the soil. The massive implement was built by 700 volunteers of the Manitoba Agricultural Museum. The huge drawbar was built to handle 4 Rumely's, however rain and heavy soil conditions made the fifth unit necessary. This breaks the previous world record of 60 plow bottoms of 14 inches. The Rumely Model E's are identical units to those used to set the original record in 1911.

Rumleys are nothing but awesome machines. Some years ago while at Antique Powerland in Brooks Oregon, they had their daily parade and in the lead was 5 or 6 OilPulls from the small one to a real monster. I made a commend to those around me someone could almost dance to that rhythmic beat. They all laughed and said we needed some instruments

Carl Helsing: I also live near the former Rumely factory -- in Laporte County, IN. About 12 miles from their former site. Also a member at the Hesston Steam Museum. If you know where to look, right off the intersecton of Lincolnway and Madison Street, in downtown Laporte, there is a memorial plaque placed at the edge of the block/area where the Rumely factory once stood. Also, if you know where to look just north of that intersection, you can see the tops of the railroad tracks (siding) that turned into the factory buildings, still (barely) sticking out of the pavement...... There is a RUMELY/ALLIS Museum under development on Highway 2 west, beside the Laporte County fairgrounds property. Do an online search to get more info.

How much torque do these internal combustion traction engines produce at the belt wheel, and how did they match up to similar sized steam traction engines in pulling power and belt turning power? Thanks.
@Rainhill1829
@Rainhill1829 7 жыл бұрын
I did some quick number mashing based on the data I have, these Rumely Model E's seen in this video are rated at an output of 30-60, but in fact produced 49.9-75.6 on the Nebraska Test. Wish modern manufacturers would build engines to this standard. The engines themselves produced roughly 980 pound feet of torque at their operating speed of 320rpm. Steam engines of similar size actually stack up almost perfectly according to the numbers. The best steam match to the Rumely E would be the Case 65 steam traction engines of the same era. On the belt they would be evenly matched but the steam engine would be able to out-lug the Rumely given it has two power strokes per revolution to the Rumely's one. Pulling power would render similar results as the traction engine has more weight on the drive axle and, like an electric motor, can exert full torque to the wheels from a dead standstill without the need for a clutch. These are just musings as the only way to really know would be to actually pit them head to head. I would love to see that.

Wow, all that plow in the ground and only 150 "rated" drawbar HP combined. (250 "actual" according to the Nebraska Tests) I wonder how many of today's "horsepower" it would take to pull that same amount of plow? Funny how some used to under-rate the power and now on modern machines they embellish it. Excellent videos...keep up the good work!
@rosiehawtrey
@rosiehawtrey 5 жыл бұрын
These engines are more about torque than power, although apparently are all running well above the official figures. In this case (pun not intended) it's also that you have 5 sets of drivewheels instead of one, so the tractive force is distributed and there's less likely to be slip. With a single modern machine it'd either leave these standing or more likely dig itself a large hole & refuse to come out.. Because you're trying to put 300hp through maybe a 4ft x 2ft contact patch, instead of 250 through 5 similar size contact patches. Short version - it's not about power & torque in this case, it's about the distribution of that power and torque. It's doubtful a single 250hp Rumely could even break it out - but 5 * 50hp pulling equally can.

HORSEPOWER TO WEIGHT RATIO VERSUS DRAG????

I am not familiar with these kero powered engines, the good old steam powered much more impressive. BUT I note HP quoted by some but the real test is WHAT IS THE TORQUE? That is what pulls the plough, not horse power.

Each machine makes about 1050 foot pounds of torque when running well but they used up about half of it just to move their own mass.

Gasoline or diesel?
@Rainhill1829
@Rainhill1829 5 жыл бұрын
Gasoline, although historically they ran kerosene once the engine was warm, they only used gasoline for warming up in the morning. Now we run them on gas exclusively.

Petrol/Paraffin as they're known in the UK.. Or as my grandfather called them "the bloody thing". If you use them petrol paraffin you need to remember to switch over to petrol before shutting down - or don't expect it to start next morning.
