On March 31st 2021, Valentino Guseli landed the highest halfpipe air ever officially measured in snowboarding history. With 7.3m (24ft) he put up a new world record. Before him the world record was held by Shaun White with 7m (23ft). Valentino is a 15 year old snowoarder from Australia and is spending most of his season here in LAAX. His amplitude in the pipe is almost unseen in snowboarding.

Valentino is such a positive, passionate rider...I remember him as a kid, riding the season in the US and then a 2nd season back in Australia. Always sending it, always going big. Not totally sold this is the highest, Shuan has a video claiming 25 feet...a bit harder to really judge as opposed to adding another spin, for example. But I love the boldness...halfipe is really a story of which riders can really go big enough to do the modern tricks. Valentino has that height, exciting to see what he does in the next Olympics and beyond. It's hard to explain how dangerous it is to go that big, if you misjudge it is like hitting concrete from two stories (or more) high. These guys are warriors...the next Olympics is gonna be exciting so much halfpipe talent right now. Shaun's run last Olympics might, ironically, still be a winning run...that was so progressive...hoping that everyone pushes it forward from that, exciting to see.

Looks like 4 meters high (5 m if Im really generous) from the point where he takes off. Halfpipes are about 18 degree slope, and he travels about 10 meters along the halpipe lip, so you cant measure the distance highest point of air to the halpipe lip straight below. Great jump nonetheless.

How is it measured, whole body, the board? Grats to Valentino!

It is measured parallel to the pipe coping going up to the lowest point of the rider. We used the most modern measuring system available at the moment done by rawmotion.com.

I wonder how they measure it. Is it the height that is perpendicular to gravity (i.e. if forward momentum stopped and the rider plummeted straight down), or perpendicular to the rim of the halfpipe, which is obviously sloping down. You need to remember Year 10 trigonometry to do the conversion between measurement bases. Pause it at 1:06 when it's the slow mo of him at the apex. The scaffold structure of the chair lift tower is perpendicular to the rim of the half pipe, and the black pole with the snow depth markings on it is perpendicular to gravity. And it also has the metres marked on it, so he is 9 metres high at the apex, not just 7.3 metres!!! (could be 9 yards, not 9 metres, though!)

It is measured on the the black pole by using a measuring system with multiple cameras. The same system and setup is also used at the olympics.

He went big, but since it was a one hit run, in a non competitive setting it doesn’t seem that special. In most other sports this wouldn’t be considered a valid record due to those circumstances.
