I always remembered as a kid where our relative used a Daiwa Goldcast reel with the round handle. I always thought that that reel was something really really special since no one else had a reel like that. Those were the days when reels were made of steel and made to last 10 ~ 15 years.....

Thanks for the video! Helpful information on this reel and type of rod combo. You sold me on the Goldcast. I bought a new one with the graphite body and several cheap used Japan-made models to take apart just because I was curious about the differences. I can't tell much difference in the internals. One tiny spring is a little different, but the rest is the same. Seems like the 508RL is comparable to the newer GC80 model. It seems like Daiwa will send replacement parts if needed, so I will be requesting a few things to repair my used ones. If you have the time and interest, I would like to see a video of how you disassemble and clean/lubricate these reels! Looks like yours is in great shape!
@NLoutside75 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video This reel is basically the same as the goldcast GC 80 The only difference is the newer ones have graphite frames instead of metal The 80 in the name is that is the suggested line is 8,lb test The gc100 is the next size, 10lb The largest is GC 120 What models of Daiwa spincast do you have? All the goldcast reels are pretty much the same These are the only Daiwa spincast with an oscillating spool I will certainly do a video on servicing this reel and will let you know when it's uploaded Thanks for watching

@@NLoutside75 The numbering system you mentioned makes sense. Have you ever used the medium or large goldcast? I have the Thailand-made Daiwa GC100, and 3 used Japan-made Daiwa 508RLs to tinker on. I compared the schematic diagrams and they are identical except for the graphite versus metal frame, as you mentioned. So far workmanship seems the same. One thing I got hung up on for a while on disassembly was the removal of the shaft bearing. It is reverse-threaded. I wrapped it in a rag and used locking pliers to remove. Now I'm waiting for some reel oil from amazon for the bearings and bushings. Already have marine grease for the gears. What lubricants do you use for your reels?
@NLoutside75 Жыл бұрын
@@Lessonsmadefun64 I haven't used the larger ones I've seen pictures of all 3 side by side and there is a significant difference in the small one to the largest one Sounds like you have a good supply of these reels For lubrication I would say use reel oil or any light oil Sewing machine oil is a great choice as well as gun oil For grease I wouldn't use marine grease unless it's made for reels That kind of grease as well as automotive grease is way too heavy and will slow the reel down I use Penn precision grease Is is blue and it's described for reels Most sporting goods stores sell fishing reel grease And there are many different brands out there

@@NLoutside75 I finally received my reel . 🤩👌 Outta the box, it was very rough, with an old dry line. Opened it up, and i found the same thing that was in my 70's Daiwa Minicast , old hard grease and extrmelly gunked parts and washers. Now that its all clean, oil change has been done (😄) and the trilene XL is on there, its A SUPERB reel. Much better that my Zebco Z03 pro in terms of quality and on couple other little things that makes the GC the ultimate king. This one does not say in what plant it was assembked but on my minicast MC59 says SEIKO on it. No wonder why the quality is up there ! Thanks for the nice video you made, it convinced me to pull the trigger on one ! Fun fact, i am wearing my Seiko SKX009 as i write this.

Thats awesome @@MxRyder19 They really are superb reels, much better than almost anything on the market today The first thing i do when i get a reel is strip it down, get rid of the old grease and lubricate it The country tha it was made in should be on the reel foot on the bottom The oldest ones say japan They made some in Korea and Thailand too If it says Seiko it is probably the oldest ones Hope you enjoy your reel and catch lots of fish with it

Hi sir, i was wondering if you are having "hanging" due to weed residu just under the pickup pin ?! I was totally happy with the quality of the real , its smoothness and precision BUT , once i started fishing with it, looking for pikes , passing through weeds, after an hour or so of constant casting, it will hang while casting. Upon every investigation i did led me to remove the little weed stripe residu that accumulates under the pin and then it will be problemless for an other hour or so. Do you have that "problem"? Thanks.
@NLoutside759 ай бұрын
Hi there I haven't had that problem you are describing I fish in pretty cold water so there isn't much weeds or grass growing in the water I'm guessing that this build up will occur over time with any spincast reel Do you have the same problem with other reels? Seems like the only solution is to periodically clean the area out Thanks for commenting
