It was anchors away and bon voyage for those who booked passage for Saturday's maiden voyage on the 250,000-ton engineering marvel, the Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship. Cristian Benavides reports.

I thought the zipline went all around the ship or at least half way around. For just a small 30 second trip, it definitely is NOT worth $90, let alone $50. Disappointed with how they are marketing that. Have zero interest in that now. Come on, RC! Also, upcharging for lounge area food? 👎 Beautiful ship though but don’t nickel and dime people who are already paying $4000 or more each to be there.

Modern cruise ships have thrusters that are designed to allow for sideways movement. Basically propeller pods that face sideways.

Oasis of the seas has been sailing just fine for the past 15 years and she was advertised as the largest. Even just after the Titanic disaster in 1913, the SS Imperator (later Berengaria) was advertised as the largest and sailed just fine (other than bad design leading to pitching and rolling to an excruciating degree) until 1939

Besides, for a ship this size, the waves would have to be absolutely massive to cause significant movement. They would have to intentionally sail through a literal hurricane. I understand the concern, but these things become safer as size increases, not more dangerous.

🤣🤣🤣 A female friend from school travelled as a doctor on a cruise ship for a while. Back then, in the 90s, it was mostly older people travelling. In her opinion, it was quite stress-free. Most of her patients had seasickness and problems from eating too much.

It is appalling that Icon has onboard a dog that was bought from a breeder. Instead, Royal should be promoting dog rescue and adoption. There are many wonderful dogs in the Miami-Dade Animal Shelter.

Whilst I admire the engineering I don't understand the appeal. Being confined to a housing estate / theme park / shopping centre / swimming pool, and crowded ones at that for weeks at a time. Why?

I thought the same and then I took a cruise. It's basically allowing yourself the ability to leave your brain behind. Everything is done for you and you can choose to do as much or little as you want. Also, they mostly advertise the crazy stuff to do but my favorite thing to do is go to the lower decks (3,4,5) where the crew hangout because there's nothing down there but staterooms. So I sit in a chair and read and listen to the waves. There's also shows and entertainment so it's fun to have that to look forward to. All ships have a comedian, bingo, songs etc but some newer ones have ice skating rink shows and escape rooms. And then even smaller events like trivia games, puzzles, karaoke where your in a lounge with sometimes 10 or 100 other people tops. I really enjoy it. That being said this particular voyage is hell for the average cruiser because A) it's overpriced as the first voyage and 2) it's full to the brim of influencers . Yuck
