Koi are close relatives to common goldfish. Goldfish are the type of fish I prefer because they have so much personality. They recognize their owners, and they show it! I had "Hushpuppie," whom I acquired for 12 cents from a pet store. I chose a drab-colored fish that I thought would never have had a chance at having a home if I hadn't taken him. His color changed with time and he became pale orange with a little orange moustache. He'd stick his head all the way out of the water at feeding time. "Hush, you're crazy!' I'd say. I had him 10 years. He's buried right next to my house. I know the exact spot. So, I get it.
@user-gu9yq5sj7c2 жыл бұрын
Are you sure goldfish recognize owner and not just the food?
@maryblaufuss75332 жыл бұрын
@@user-gu9yq5sj7c Excellent question, glad you asked! The answer is "yes" to both. When I had Hush and the other three goldfish, my father and I lived together. I used to get up earlier in the morning than my father did. I'd be the first person available to give the pets their breakfast, including the fish. I refused to overfeed them. One meal per day from me was all I'd allow. My father, on the other hand, enjoyed feeding the fish. He would offer them additional snacks throughout the day. When they knew they stood a chance to be fed, they would start their begging behavior: rapidly flapping their pectoral fins, opening and closing their mouths, shaking their heads from side to side, and facing the front of the aquarium toward whoever was standing there. I'd feed the fish, then they'd calm down. When my father arose in the morning, he'd greet the fish and they'd repeat the same begging behavior for him. They had him believing that I had never fed them. One day he and I tried an experiment. I had already fed the fish. When they saw him, they begged. I asked him to withdraw from their view. I stood in front of the tank. They did not beg. My father and I changed places. They went nuts. Furthermore, every time throughout the day that he'd stand in front of the tank, they'd beg. That proves that they could count to "one," and that they knew I had fed them once, and that they wouldn't get any more food from me until the next morning. It also proves that they knew who had fed them and who hadn't, and they knew from whom they could potentially get more food. In retrospect, we should have continued the experiment, using disguises to confuse them. Maybe we could have written a paper on it. At the time it was just a good joke among all six of us. Anyway, their ruse was discovered and discouraged. I (somewhat) convinced my father of the dangers of overfeeding fish, so if I fed them in the morning and had to go out afterward, I'd leave him a note to this effect: "I fed the fish. Don't let them lead you to believe otherwise!' Who would have thought anyone would have to guard against dishonest fish...

@@user-gu9yq5sj7c My gold fish used to jump when I go up to the tank . Out of the four years I had her she only done that with me and some of the times I didn't feed her. She changed color from orange to almost gold or light orange before she passed.

There was (maybe still there) a koi fish hatchery in Santa Barbara, California. I remember going there to watch and feed the koi. It’s fascinating that koi fish will only grow as large in relation to the size of their pond. If you move a koi to a larger pond, it will grow accordingly. The koi farm in Santa Barbara had multiple ponds of multiple sizes filled with koi of various sizes. There is nothing as tranquil as relaxing and watching koi fish swim around and interact with the other koi and even humans. If I were a koi, I would definitely buy a plane ticket to Dubai and seek out the most expensive and elaborate koi pond where I would live the good life in a nice environment and 24 hour service with ten meals per day!

@ces69 Жыл бұрын
It’s a time bomb, you are very fortunate to not of had any problem’s ….YET! Think about it, you feed the fish, the fish poop into the pond, where does the waste go? The fish waste contains ammonia which converts to nitrite, both of which are highly toxic to fish! If you have a lot of plants and small fish they will process the waste but as the fish grow and produce more waste it will become more than the plants can process and that’s when fatalities will start to occur! Please don’t wait till that happens, research some filtration now and get some installed, for the sake of the fish if nothing else! If you fail to do so the fish will eventually poison themselves!
