However, my late wife found happiness by giving to and helping others. Her will to surprise me with life time wishes gave me much happiness and treasured memories with her. When I questioned her generosity - she told me it gave her much joy. I too have found much fulfilment from seeing people enjoy my artistic creations and work - I feel it motivates me to create even more. Life is not a bed of roses , I know, and I have personally experienced that - but I think we can sometimes become very depressed in life if we become preoccupied with just seeking our own happiness .

I have visited Northlandz a few times, and I can say that it is certainly one of the most impressive model railroads that I have ever seen. Bruce has a wonderful pipe organ when you walk in, and can be seen playing the instrument at various times, but believe me, this guy is special and certainly has an amazing talent. He has the rare gift of living out his dream, and passing it along to others.

AFAIK, Northlandz is still the largest layout that was completely privately built (as opposed to public/large organization) layout in the world. I've been to Northlandz once, many years ago. Seeing it in person was amazing! I have yet to see a video that does justice to the true grandeur of the layout (and this video, good as it is, still does not capture the true scale of the layout; some of the mountains are 1/2 scale-mile high!). For example, none of the most jaw-dropping bridges were in this one; as spectacular as some of the bridges seen, there are far greater ones. I especially like his end comment (paraphrased): If you have joy to share with the world, share it!

@@gregshonle2072 I believe that S franklin is referring to the Minatur Wunderland in Hamburg has 15,715 meters or just under 10 miles of track, however they are an group of people who have put that together, so you are correct that this is the larges privately built and owned layout. While Wunderland has some really impressive features (such as their scale working airport) the fact that he has built almost all this himself is more impressive.

I have been there once. I had several HO trains and I built several layouts when I was a kid, nothing like this. You need to see this place, it is unbelievable. To walk the entire layout takes about 90 minutes. The workmanship on the buildings and landscape is impeccable.

It is an amazing set and I love it. I reckon the thumbs down though is since its not the world's largest, just a click bait title. Perhaps its the largest privately owned or the largest built by one man but the real largest is is in minatur wonderland in hamburg, Germany. While this is quite some achievement, the German set is epic on a whole other scale and well worth checking out.

Yes, Wunderland is the worlds largest....but not by much when comparing tracks. Northland has 8 miles of track and Wunderland has 9.5....Wunderland also has moving model cars, planes and ships. But I would still pick Northland because it's quality of construction is far superior and is almost all the work by one man. Wunderland employs about 360 people to construct, run, maintain and expand. Like comparing a Bob Ross painting to a Rembrandt......there just isn't a comparison.

Are you insane? Have you ever been to the Wunderland? They have an amazing level of detail and the top quality is unquestionable. I don't say this guys work is shit, but even comparing it to the Wunderland is far from reasonable. Not only do they have longer tracks (1,5 miles may not seam to be a lot but it's almost 20% more) but they have more than 10 times the trains running. And not only do they have more trains, they are even much longer, and therefor more realistic. All the trains I saw in this video are ridiculously short and look nothing like reality. But that's not enough, the landscape is much more diversified. They got sections from all over Europe and the US. They have a working airport with planes taking of and landing and ships that are navigating through real water. The guys in Hamburg are at least as passionate as this dude, but far more professional. They know their stuf, they offer a great experience to their guests and they are not some cold business who's main goal is to make lots of money. They do it out of passion and you can feel that when you're there. You can tell it even by the very fair prices in their restaurant. And finally, if you claim to be the worlds largest, and even put a sign outside that sais so, you got to research a bit if that's true. But I guess in some parts of the US the World means America. So either he is such an ignorant guy he doesn't know about Wunderland or he does and just assumes none of his visitors knows it.

Rammstein45 well this is a "railroad" not a "railway" the European term "railway" describes Wunderland, whereas the video depicts an American "railroad." Therefore this is the world's largest "model railroad." Railroad is also the correct term to use for describing, oh I don't know, tracks which carry typical North American trains, and North American rolling stock (all of which we know is built to a higher standard of safety levels) I mean look at a nice EMD SD40u, there's like 10 feet of nose and I think the crew would survive the crash, unlike in the EuroSprinter where the driver is 2 inches from the front of the engine, oh I'm sorry I mean 3 centimeters. The point is that American trains are better, bigger, and look right.

I put a shelf train in my office at home in an area 10X18 that goes through a closet and like you say, it gives me so much pleasure to attend to it, keep the tracks clean and shop for additions. I have watched quite a few videos, but I think the amazement factor at the scale of this railway in terms of height, engineering & maintenance complexity is breathtaking. Some of those trestle bridges, in the real height of the bridge support structure spanning canyons, leaves me absolutely staggered. A railway to be proud of in its accomplishment and in every way.

I remember the original house with the 6 basements. For the first year or two he allowed direct visitation. Then for a few years you had to park at a local hobby shop and a shuttle bus would take you. Then he built Northlandz. It's not really a model railroad in the true sense of the word--it isn't laid out or operated like a true railroad. The trackage is simply a bunch of loops, each controlled by a power pack. You don't see industrial sidings, freight yards, engine facilities, passenger terminals, etc. I'd call it the world's largest display of operating trains. Worth seeing because of the sheer size, but more of interest to children and folks who just like to see trains running through mountains and across bridges. Of more interest perhaps, at least to me, was the fact that Bruce is/was a concert organist. In his home, the last basement contained a pipe organ, built by Bruce, and often being played by him as you entered the room. In Northlandz, half way through the tour you enter a concert hall with a pipe organ (not sure if it's the same one he built) and often someone is playing. You can sit down and rest your feet, and listen to some nice music.

+Victrola Fix cause if that mile long train derails, you got a mile long train to pick up and rerail. And if it derails in a tunnel, off a bridge, or hits another mile long train, it quickley becomes a major issue

btcrail: so you build a realistic rr and run unrealstic trains on it? i don´t think that you need 150 cars behind 2 or 3 engines, but 50-80 would be nice. many others do the same and they manage to rerail them if an accident happens. not a big deal.

yes the german layout is about 15% longer ... about 9.5 miles. Both are impressive. The German layout has much more city life as well but i give both kudos.

It's a mile and a half longer. However, comparing the two are apples and oranges. They convey two different types of rail service, and this one is built almost exclusively by one man, as opposed to the team who built Wunderland. Can't we just admire them both for what they are?
