As an American mechanical engineer with almost 50 years experience in metal fabrication, a automotive and heavy equipment mechanic, aircraft mechanic, building construction, and a little bit of much more, I'm used to western industrial and safety standards, I truly almost cannot believe what I'm seeing! But I'm compelled to say that these men working in that absolutely crude foundry and that archaic dangerous machine shop are actually highly skilled, their knowledge of the metal casing process and mould making is excellent. Their ingenuity in the machine shop is nothing short of extraordinary, I've never seen a lathe quite like that one, or one so completely worn out in that many separate pieces even in the most backwoods home shop here in America but they make every bit of it work! Many people will see all of that and laugh, they'll mock and make mean jokes about them but they will be wrong, those men are very skilled artists at what they're doing! I can't get over their complete lack of safety gear, no shoes no heavy duty clothing, no eye protection I actually cringed when the molten bronze was splashing holy crap! 😂😂 but like I said they're very ingenious and highly skilled craftsmen, I don't know how to give them a higher compliment than craftsman and I genuinely mean it!!

Safety aside, I'm not sure I'd want this screw with its mark-one eyeball precision. The blades won't have exactly the same profile and for the life of me, it was mounted on the lathe off-center. Somebody's prop shaft is going to get torn loose from the vibration.
@Buddhismhelps2 ай бұрын
These men do what they can with what they have, since they can’t afford the fancy stuff we’re used to in America. The boats these props go on have slow turning shafts, not unlike the container ships which turn at 125 rpm. They get the job done, but are not precision products, meaning they are more affordable for the wood hull slow moving river boats . It’s a different world.

The floor of their shop must have 24" of high-quality casting sand layered upon it, casting sand that someone has to sift through regularly. They have a dozen or so propellers stacked up on one side of the shop, so it's clear that they know what they're doing. My guess is that the donkey's next stop is another shop that will straighten, polish, and balance the prop. The reputation of these guys must be excellent, for a bad prop can cause a shipwreck. The 550' lake freighter I worked on had a spare prop bolted to the fantail. I'm guessing that these are Pakistanis, who have been doing metalwork since there's been metal. The locals of the Khyber Pass can build you a rocket launcher and have been cranking out simplified AK-47's for decades. I don't believe the guys lack shoes due to poverty: I think it's what they like to wear for shop work.
