This is the world’s largest underground bicycle parking garage, which is built below the Utrecht train station in the Netherlands, it's a three-storey bicycle parking lot, which can store 12,656 bikes.
The project forms part of a wider redevelopment of the area surrounding the city's railway station, to enable cyclists to ride from the street level to the bike store, from which they can quickly access the station. It is hoped to encourage locals to commute using bikes and public transport instead of cars, and in turn ease congestion in Utrecht and make it a more sustainable city.
There are row after row of bikes stacked 2 racks high, with 1000’s of bikes in the racks. Most of the bicycle parking spaces are standard type bike racks, but there are even special bays for large cargo bikes.
Alongside the storage, the structure incorporates a repair service and bicycle hire. It also relies on a digital system to guide cyclists to a parking spot that provides the quickest access to the platforms.
At the centre of each storey, there are three stairwells that allow commuters to quickly access the main terminal building, train platforms and public square. Enclosed by glass walls and skylights, these staircases also double as a lightwells, to bring natural light into the depths of the building.
Ultimately, when traveling from point A to point B, people will take whatever method of transport that gets them there quickly and efficiently as possible. But due to good planning in Dutch cities, the choice most people make, is to ride a bicycle.
Thanks for watching.

Because of bicycle culture. Most of my classmates cycled 8-10 miles to school every day. School buses don't exist. Public transport is good, but more expensive than a bike and more restrictive than one too. Cycling to school has been a thing for longer than the pretty painted lanes and bicycle flats.

that's it shut down the country, there is a piece of litter. a scene from MiB happens, black trucks roll up, men in suits and hazmat overalls jump out, surrounding the area, a hazmat team with a bomb disposal box comes up and with long clamps they pick up the cup and place in the bomb disposal box and carefully cart it away. They then get back in the van and drive off and 1 lone street sweaper is left to just finish up sweeping the area.

Maybe no smog, but it's not like the air here is clean either. Yes, there are a lot of bikes, but there's a lot of road traffic, air traffic, water traffic and especially pollution from industry (also from other countries), which makes Dutch air one of the dirtiest in Europe. Could be worse of course and it's slowly getting better, also thanks to the bike friendly infrastructure

Between cities, most people in the Netherlands don't use a bike either, they either drive or take a train. But the vast majority of the time, people don't go that far, schools, shops and everything else is within a bike ride, or even reachable on foot, exactly because cars don't get nearly as much space, so everything can be build really closely together and still feel open. It's when you replaced your Main Street with a mini-malls at the edge of town, with acres of parking around it, but hardly any pedestrian infrastructure, that people will need a car, which will then lead to more parking needed, which will mean everything needs to be built even further apart and gets even less pedestrians, which...

This is not the only bicycle parking garage in the Utrecht Central Station area. In total there are now dozens of garages with in total about 33.000 parking places. For public transport users (23.000) and employees of the many offices and shopping malls (10.000) around the station and they are nearly all underground. There seems never enough however as there are plans for another couple of 1000's end 2021.

I believe we had an automated underground bike parking system in Millennium Park in Chicago for one hot minute… but I’m not sure what became of it; if it still exists, no one talks about it anymore. It wasn’t speedy, though: you fed your bike into one gizmo aboveground, which couldn’t handle a rush of cyclists. But it was a nice idea. I think we still have lockers and showers downtown for cycling commuters, but I’m not so sure about the parking.
