Yeah, thats not how it works. Anyone can use a lightsaber. Everyone has the force, just different amounts, this also explains how it can be passed along in a family tree. So if something is REALLY FAR AWAY such as an explosion you will see it first (because light is faster) before you hear it when the sound eventually reaches you. That's why they put the delay because realistically you wouldn't hear it the INSTANT it happens

I think it was just a problem with the battery, or maybe a loose wire, anyway it was probably a gradual drop in power to the electro-magnetic field generator, the plasma of course stretches farther the less power, however the plasma blade maintained strength throughout the process so the battery probably isn't the culprit, so yeah, it was a loose wire going to the wave generator.
