Bitter melon, also known as bitter gourd or karela (in India), is a unique vegetable-fruit that can be used as food or medicine.It is the edible part of the plant Momordica Charantia, which is a vine of the Cucurbitaceae family and is considered the most bitter among all fruits and vegetables.
The plant thrives in tropical and subtropical regions, including:
South America,Asia,parts of Africa,the Caribbean
The bitter melon itself grows off the vine as a green, oblong-shaped fruit with a distinct warty exterior - though its size, texture and bitterness vary between the different regions in which it grows - and is rich in vital vitamins and minerals.

bitter gourd. we call it ampalaya in the Philippines. for food preparation we usually slice It into half lengthwise, scrape the insides and rub salt against the inner skin to remove some of the bitterness and then usually sautéed with other veggies or boiled.

Bitter gourd is my favourite. Unlike its name, is not that bitter. If you want something really bitter, you try eating it with bamboo shoot. Its bitter than medicines.

The Indian one literally tests your patience, I'm an Indian I just put 2 seed in my garden, they've grown up but only 2 female flowers approx. 3-4 months over and a whole lot of male flowers.

In India it’s called Karela; however in Kerala (do not mix up the names) southern state of India, it’s called Pavakka. It has high medicinal value, it’s very good for diabetes. Every Keralites wherever they are in the world, they grow this in their backyard.

Wow bitter melons if they really white coloured are from Taiwan , it is so yummy you stir fried with with fermented bean curd wow , but for non vegan you can stir fried with pork and bean curd and with tamarin juices so yummy

My favorite vegie back home in the Philippines, We grow them everywhere or anywhere in my lil province and they thrive healthily- Young leaves can be eaten as salad too, Just mix it with ripe tomatoes, green onions and pour a lil bit of fish sauce or soy sauce and hmmmmm....So yummmy.! I moved here in Texas and i can't wait to grow mine in the backyard this year😍😆

There's a big difference in the bitterness level between the Chinese and Indian varieties. The Chinese is milder with the Indian variety extremely bitter. In Southeast Asia, the young leaves are also used for cooking and just like the fruit, is very bitter. Here's one thing you might not know. If you let bitter melon ripen, the pulp surrounding the seed are actually very sweet.
