Dude, that is an impressive piece of engineering... Very nice jig! The carbide faces is a nice touch 👀

Yeah man it is incredible. I bought it not 100% sure I would like it (figured I could try and sell it if I didn’t like it) but turns out I absolutely love this thing. 👍

I own one of those jigs and it’s amazing. I had a nasty flu a couple years back that kinda messed up my nerves and the ability to do freehand grinds. I bought this jig and in my opinion has been definitely worth every penny

Sorry to hear about the messed up nerves. Glad to hear you like the jig though and that it allows you to keep grinding. Cheers 👍

Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. As I watched I became convinced that this is the best jig of its kind out there. If I made knives for a living I would definitely buy one! Wish the one I use had all these features.

Very impressive work, and the jig's nice, too! I'm glad to see folks using those support fingers. Years ago, I debuted that idea on one of the forums when another smith was complaining about how his long blades were always deflecting as he sanded them in his vise. I'd had the same issue and resolved it by tapping some 1/4-20 holes in the blade support and inserting some nylon bolts. Worked like a charm and I've been using it for a decade or so. Publish or perish, as they say, so I was happy to get the idea out there since I'd never seen any knife makers using something to support the tip of the blade.

Ive had one for a couple years now, and really like it the Teflon tape wears pretty quickly, so I'm attaching a sheet of HDPE to the bottom. I recommend this tool.

Funny I built myself kind of the same jig from aluminum without being aware of this fixture, same with a centered clamped on fileguide. The blade can be reversed in the same way, and I even had the idea of supporting the tip of the blade by inserting screws through the jig. Though mine has not as much features as this moen-jig, I am very happy with it, and it only cost me some 50 Euro.

Really appreciate this video, bought this jig two years ago and have loved using it. As a new blade maker, I always wished there were more videos of it in use. Picked up a couple ideas from you, looking forward to using it to reduce stock thickness! Thanks again. Also, what is angle cube you’re using? Looks sweet, like the size!

They are expensive indeed. I probably wouldn’t have bought one if it weren’t for the sale. I am glad to have it and now wish I’d paid regular price and had one sooner. Oh well. Live and learn.

In the end, I saw that you dunked everything in water, is it enough to cool the blade by just spraying with water from a bottle or a small but steady dribble on the abrasive belt just above the edge of the knife, maybe operated by a foot pedal?
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife Жыл бұрын
No, grinding blades quickly get the steel so hot you would need a steady stream of mist or water to keep it cool enough.

Hey Jeremy. Love your videos. You’ve helped me a lot on my bladesmithing journey. I’m ready for a 2x72. The newest Black Fox one looks sweet. At the same time it doesn’t have the time tested reliability like the KMG, ameribrade, or brodbeck. If you were to have one machine to do it all, what would you pick?

I feel a bevel jig has its place. But freehand should be what everyone aims for. Bevels jigs can only work good on straight blades. I only use them to hold blades that are extremely hard to get a good grip on so it doesn't fly out of my hand into my feet. But my carbide file guide is my go-to if I need assistance.
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife Жыл бұрын
I agree. I went years only doing freehand and still do it regularly so I don’t lose the muscle memory. I do find though that with a good jig I am often noticeably faster than freehand grinding. A good jig eliminates some of the possibility of mistakes. This jig in particular is really fast and in doing this for a living, I’ll take any advantage I can get to be more efficient and productive 👍
