Tackle editor Mark Sawyer knew he wanted a big fish to test out Daiwa's new Air Z Pro pole (RRP a whisker under £7,000!) but he didn't quite bargain for the battle that would follow as he ran the rule over one of most prestigious tackle items ever made...

I watched the original video 10 years ago when Mark was using the Air. I have been fishing rolfs for 25 years+ and the lightest elastic I use in the winter is black hydro. The bream in this place can pull red hydro out so why use white hydro on a venue where you know if the float goes under its likely to be a double figure carp 🤪 This video shows nothing to show how Daiwa's flagship model copes with the fish as most of the fight is played on the topkit. I watched a mate land a 23lb carp from Viaduct 3 weeks ago using an Air Z Pro and it took him 6 minutes on black hydro. I have also had a 25lb 10oz carp from Rolfs last year using an Airity x45 which took me 7 mins to land on purple hydro. This was not because I bullied the fish. It was because my tackle was balanced to what I expected to catch. An angling journalist / tackle tester like Mark Sawyer would not have used white hydro if he was testing this pole at Makins in the winter, so why use it at rolfs unless you are fishing the silverfish festivals.

I was thinking this myself why not up his elastic choice to a black, even a grey. I know its winter. An anglers like to fine down to get bites but carp are carp. Ive never seen the point of scaling down.

We used to have things called reels to gather in the line, all that hand pulling seems all very awkward. ;) give me a waggler rod mate Ive just spent over 10 minutes realising I don't want a pole especially a 5 grand one! really enjoyed this thanks

When I was into fishing (12+ years ago!), I went to Clattercote Res. just north of Banbury to try out my _Preston Innovations Power Carp_ pole. I ended up with 5 carp over 10lbs for a total weight of 62 lbs (I didn't weight anything less than 10lbs or put it into the total.). Had some 9 or 10 or so other smaller carp. Biggest carp landed was just under 15lbs. But I lost an even bigger one at the net as the hook just pulled. C'est la vie...

I fished Rolfs yesterday 23,07.2022 and managed to foul hook a 10lb carp in the tail. The fish bolted to the left and at one stage the fish was 2 pegs down from where I was fishing. I was using Matrix 14 - 16 slik and I had to add sections to keep up with the fish and after 10 minutes of trying to pull him backwards I finally netted it. A bit later on in the match I had another at 13lb 2oz fishing matrix 22 slik down the edge and this took 6 minutes to land. My point is its not about how long it takes you to land a fish, but every single fishing video I have watched whether it be Andy May, Des Ship, Jamie Hughes, Will Raison, Steve Ringer, etc the one point that they always mention is :having BALANCED TACKLE - I don't think this was the case Also I don't think there is any benefit in playing a fish for that amount of time and whether it is good for fish welfare , is another debate for someone else at another time Mark Sawyer fished Rolfs 10 years ago using the the Daiwa Air with Black hydro, did he think returning to the same venue10 years later the fish would have got SMALLER . I cant see the logic

Interesting review, know at least 20 decent club anglers that would have made light work of that fish on a £500 pole, truth is if you've got the cash you can have all the gear and no idea.

Yes, but he was fishing with a light elastic and was probably nervous about breaking anything as the cost for a top kit would be substantial I'd imagine...

Definitely not to big for a pole, they catch fish like this week in week out from monks lakes. Although white hydro can land big carp I would of thought you would only use that if you didn't want to bump skimmers and bream. Using white hydro is not testing this pole what so ever. Going to monks or this place in the summer with heavier elastic would be testing this pole. In all honesty would you even risk using a pole like this for big carp ? You would just use a stronger pole. I know Steve ringer uses red hydro with the air z but he's sponsored so if a section breaks it's not a problem.

Also for what it's worth if old man Rolf still owned the lake he would have sent you packing after you had netted that fish, or got you to put a more suitable elastic on.

Clearly this rod is designed for competition fishing. Sure it is impressive, but would have been nice to see how it is when shipping in and out at 16 meters. What is the downforce. See it in 11,5-13-14,5-16, but I guess till 13 it is light and stiff. A busy silverfish fishing suits it more, I think. Nonetheless this is a true flagship pole which will cost big money, and the real reason of it is to show the latest and greatest technogy Daiwa has. I am biased towards Browning, so my next pole will be the PT, but the best price/value pole in the market is probably the Middy one.

I caught a 23lb mirror on a £100. Pole and I had no trouble with the pole. It took me an hour to land it though! I certainly would buy a pole for £6000. Only a tackle tart would do that.

Well if your wining 60k matches you can afford this... I would never spend this.much money on something without a engine lol 😆. I get you cant take cash with you. Just think its abit extreme. How much u think the company pay for them poles to be made... Ive cought decent fish and had a good time on a Argo's rod and even a wish pole that cost like 10 quid and still got it. And u talking about spares mate if a 6 k rod breaks then it ain't worth that money it should be a lifetime warranty

Sorry this is not true guide to the pole…. 99% of time on top kit. Needs to go back during summer and get that carp on using something like black hydro and playing it at length not just top kit. False proof. Wonder how much Daiwa slipped him to do this video at this time of year.
