I think the black plane uses a capacitor rather than a battery to power the motor. So the 15 seconds is probably just the time it takes to charge the capacitor and as long as you don't overvolt it, it won't explode. You can charge it for a week at the rated voltage and it will never explode. Cool little planes for sure!

NOW THAT WAS FUN!!! Loved my Air Hawgs back in the day. Before that in the 80’s I spent many days with the balsa wood airplanes and a rubber band powered propeller. If you want to find the leak on that plane just pump it up and hold it under water in your bathtub. Maybe you could epoxy the leak if it’s just a crack from hitting the pavement or something.

Those may be cool, but nothing had more entertainment value for us kids back in the 70's than those cheap little .79 cent rubber band powered balsa kit planes you could buy at the 5 and dime store. Spent hundreds of hours winding up those plastic props until my fingers had a thousand cuts on them and were covered with blood. We flew those planes until all of the crashes finally broke the balsa beyond repair or until the plane got lost high up in a tree or on top of the roof of a neighborhood house. We would then just save up our spare change until we could afford to buy another little balsa basher plane kit. What a blast those little guys were!

Thank you for the fun video. It reminded me of the old Cox gas control line planes I used to fly as a kid. My brother and I saved up Kelloggs box tops for a year and ordered an ALPHA 1 Rocket. It worked in Baking soda and vinegar. Like boys WILL DO, we overloaded it with too much vinegar and Baking soda, and shot it to the moon and back. That thing nearly exploded on the launch pad, but it went over 500 feet and was destroyed by the resulting crash landing. Some fun though.

I've still got an original Air Hogs from 25+ years ago. On its backup wing now and not flown in ~25 years but I was so impressed with its motor its become a shelf-queen. Why that motor design hasn't become more popular is beyond me! Golf carts with solar sun-shades running an air-compressor? I live 8-miles round-trip from town. A 500W solar panel (and back-up battery) should make that easy. What a neat motor design!

The bladder is probably “hot” due to the compression of the molecules that make up the air in the bladder thus increasing their average kinetic energy(temp.) and increasing the frequency of collisions between molecules which also contributes to an increase in total k.e.(heat). (The phenomenon you observed is sometimes called the heat of compression). Sorry for the mini lesson…but I taught Chemistry and Physics for more than 30 years. Great channel content by the way. I used to do a lot of building and flying of RC airplanes and was on the cover of many magazines back in the 1990’s. The last one I was on was Nov. 1998 Model Aviation with my 38% One Design which is now hanging from the ceiling of my shop. I need to get back to flying now that I have young grandchildren.

Fun is the key word. Reminds me of a cable line rc plane when I was younger. You held the battery/motor assembly (looks like a big flashlight) in your hand which goes to thin a 8 ft cable attached to the plane. You start up and turn to allow the plane to take off. The plane had no motor. The cable spun inside a plastic/rubber tube turning the prop on the plane. A variation of control line planes...just not as dangerous.

My father started in the hobby during 1950's. And planes were basically free flight. No rc. Start the nitro engine and throw it in the air. And today we still have people doing that. Pretty cool to see these new technology. Also back then we had these co2 free flight also. :) Be cool that you do a free flight of co2. Co2 uses like the co2 cartiage and motor is basically also piston driven. So cool :)

The reason the air reservoir gets hot when you pump it up is that air's ability to hold heat is based on volume. One cubic foot of air holds the same amount of heat, whether it's at ambient pressure, or compressed to 1000 psi (scuba tanks get really hot as they get filled). As you pump air in, you're compressing a larger volume of air into a smaller volume space, and it must shed the excess heat. The opposite effect can be observed as well. If you rapidly decompress a container of compressed air or other gas, the container will feel cold, as the remaining air begins absorbing heat to replace that which was carried out by the released gas. By the way, I still have one of those old Airhogs planes here...

That feeling of accomplishment is way I fly free flight. Plus I'm not spending hundreds of dollars to get the same feeling. I started flying RCs in 1993 joined AMA 1994, now back to flying more and more free flight, just for that reason. I just can't get in to the foamies as much because, I'm not big on filling a landfilled full of foam, and balsa can be tossed in a fire when it is fully retired. One thing that has made RC much better is the electric motors now my model last 10 years or more because the fuel is not dissolving the covering. Nate it was awesome seeing your joy of flight with these free flight toys, I too flow them as a young man.

Only MLB could afford real balls The NFL still used baby pigs as balls There was that really popular Mayan game where you hit round stones with your elbow. We had to walk past wooly mammoths on the way to school, which was a factory school where they taught us how to dip matchsticks into phosphorus vats and we all got black lung or you worked in the mills and got "textile lung" Good times. I don't know what this newfangled Air Hogs is, back in my day the Wright brothers were the only pilots! A loaf of bread cost a ha'penny and a whole chicken was a nickel. Coss, yew hadta kill'n skin dat chick'n yesself, aw dang, my words done got olde fasshined tew. Shee-yit, I'm a hillbilly now dad gum it! I lost my pretty words thinkin' 'bout da ye olde tymes.
