well, there are two major arguments for altruism (being kind / helpful). 1.) Evolutionary: while being selfish appears to be more selfserving, the fact that the vast majority of people are at least somewhat inclined to help each other proves without doubt, that genes and instinctual behavior survived a lot more than not. 2.) Logical: If you are kind and friendly to your surrounding, your surrounding is a lot more inclined to be helpful to you. That is how any living creature works, so its not even human psychology, but something a lot lot more basic. Karma might be an illusive concept, but causality itself kinda picks up where our wishes for karma are lacking.
