Steve Davis asks if the snooker should stay in Sheffield or move away to a bigger venue.
Also has the top 3 shots in the championship. Stuart Binghams shot on the yellow was similar to Big Bill Werbeniuks (Shot A) in the 1985 WC v Joe Johnson.

Just based on my viewing preferences, the biggest draws are all in their 40s and what is interesting is their excellence and their personalities. There are not many younger players with such charisma. Trump, Lisowski and Allen come to mind. When that older generation are finished, I think the appeal of snooker will take a big hit.

The venue doesn't need to be very big, who wants to sit up in the gods where you can hardly see the table...? Let's be honest Snooker is an acquired taste, those who like it love it but it's not mainstream enough to pull in big bucks. Most people in the game with sense should realise that.

They think of the 18.5 million that watched the 85 final, but there was nothing else on TV back then, no game consoles, smartphone, or the internet. There needs to be a 64 man for rhe final stages of the world championships today. So there needs to be another venue within walking distance of the Crucible (and relayed to the Crucible) to play the extra matches that can't be squeezed in at the Crucible with the extra round to fit in.

To me snooker is The Crucible and The Crucible is snooker - the two are synonymous with each other. I've always wanted to go there, I believe its intimacy really brings something different and the thought of fighting to get a ticket (which admittedly hikes the price up) just makes it that extra special. To move it outside of Sheffield would just wipe the mystique away in an instant and that would destroy the game of snooker in so many ways. I've committed myself to get to The Crucible once before 2027 and just hope it stays.

Im not sure i agree with your statement that "it will never be". We live in an age of the internet and it has never been easier to get people interested in things that before they would not have considered. I do agree that it is possible to over do it and aim too high as well. Remember that these other world locations are just starting to try and increase an interest in Snooker. Look at it this way, you have Football World Cup and it really does include so many players from all over the world. Snooker can grow and be more than it is right now. I think you need more players coming in (from everywhere). Im not saying it could be football huge as these are 2 completely different ball games (pun intended) but i think there is definite opportunities to increase the fan and player base.

Tennis grand slam events have 128 players of eaxh sex, golf majors have 156 players. Yet snooker world championships are stuck at 32 players. The world number 40 is at least as good as the world number 12 back in the 1980's, so it time to increse the fiekd to at least 64 players. But the Crucible is too small to host 64 players over 17 days and maintain the format. So how about a second venue in Sheffield very close to the Crucible that can host the extra matches that allows the world championship to maintain the 17 days with same format in the remaining 5 rounds. Not all matches can be played at the Crucible with a larger field but still just as much would be played at rhe Crucible over the 17 days as has always been the case.

Im neither too stubborn to consider changing or full on board about the possibility of moving. There's even middle ground to consider (upgrading/rebuilding/using only in the worlds etc while building better facility). I'm seeing too many comments just going off and being adamant about not moving but that also comes from peoples inability to accept change. There are options and you should consider the future of the sport as a whole. Build on it in a way that you think is better and help the world appreciate the sport, give ideas, add to the conversation people.

You're telling me I'm wrong just for considering the possibility of changing something in Snooker. I've said I'm open to it and you've gone to the extreme and literally told me "people like me are the reason why things in the world...etc" what you really mean is someone who has a different outlook than yourself. You can constructively participate in conversation about it. Things in the world change and evolve, it doesn't need to be doom and gloom and you can have input. Putting your fingers in your ears and shouting down people isn't the way. I agree that extremes of ideas can be very bad and that's why I'm ignoring gut feelings and trying to be open minded to what others are going to say to me.

Snooker needs to move on. If there is a call to have a bigger venue. Then it should be taken to that venue. So more people can enjoy it. The darts home was the circus tavern for many years. Then the darts split and the PDC took it to the Ally Pally. A much bigger venue and the PDC darts players have all had massive increases in prize money and more competitions. Snooker needs to move on. Stop wearing the bow ties and waistcoats. Let them wear their own designed shitts like the darts players have. Make them available for the kids and fans to buy. So they can support their favourite players. Stopping at venues that only hold a fraction of the potential audience is holding back the sport.

You're making some reasonable points. Worldwide I don't think Snooker is as popular (I think we all know that) but it can and is trying to grow and that can be a good thing. It's not football and not for everyone, I accept that. There needs to be some level of change. To what degree and how the changes come in that's a conversation that everyone that loves the sport needs to have. Insisting on nothing changing ever isn't realistic. That's why I say people putting up their own ideas is a good thing. Videos like this show that they want people to discuss it and their not hiding what's being talked about.

There is every reason to stay at the crucible. Hearn is a hungry count.

@@TheycallmeMrWonka they've tried to promote this as though players are 50/50 in the move/stay camp. I think the only player banging the "stay" drum is Murphy... because he has to. I think the rest would be more than happy if it moved and they were in a bigger venue with more eyes and better conditions. I think snooker could be doing more to grow too. Why isn't there a ranking event in Belgium when there are three Belgian players - all young - on the tour? Why have we not tapped into the Australian market? Why does the women's tour have 6 events in 8 countries (including in Belgium and the USA) whilst the men's tour has 17 ranking events in 3 countries? More could be being done imo

Quite unbelievable - A break away tour !!!! - Get real, if there is one thing this 2024 WSC has shown is that players outside the established top 8 are only really watchable to snooker purists

Lots of top players have complained about the Crucible over the decades. It's too small. The World Championship should move to a bigger and better venue. It needs freshening up. New presenters, new venue, new commentators. Move forward to a new and better era for snooker. Like darts when it moved from the Lakeside to the Ally Palace and became far more successful. Thousands of snooker fans try to get tickets each year but they can't because the Crucible is too small. The snooker world championship needs to move with the times and become bigger and better and that means leaving the Crucible for the good of the game and its future.

The darts is different it’s just loads of poeple getting pissed who don’t even care about darts. Snooker needs more concentration than darts

Sentiment in sports is vanishing. Snooker has now players from many parts of the world. Each country will claim a right to stage it like it or not. Even top Tennis will one day be in danger of being played on hard surface only. So watch it Wimbledon.

The game had a bum as champion last year, and now Wilson (and the less said about him the better). I absolutely hate what Hearn and his glove puppet Davis (aided and abetted by the loathsome Clive Everton) have done to our game. Joe, Fred, Pulman, Reardon, Spencer, Charlton, and Higgins, and then White. The great line ends there. The game is in ruins, and all we are left with is the self-pitying whining of O’Sullivan and the idiots on the BBC. Forget it.
